TUESDAY 9.3.43 387th DAY P.O.W
Daily issue of bully-beef today- 6 tins per squad.
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash, b'fast 0715 rice
and gravy. Stayed in camp again today. The earache
is much better. Washed my long pants, 2 h'chiefs, towel
singlet and u'pants and 2 tea towels. Made 2
chocolate pies for tea and read until dinner 1200
gravy and bread roll (exchange). Played solo
1330/1600 then wash, bedmaking etc until tea 1730
rice and gravy and burnt rice, (saved rice and
had a chocolate pie). To canteen after tea for Squad
order of 1 apple per man 8 sen, 2 pkts cigs (20's) 23 sen
ea and 1 tin of sardines between 4 @ 60 sen. Also an
issue of sanitary paper & tooth powder. Played the
first round of another hut bridge contest and won.
Roll call 2000 then supper 1 chocolate pie and 1 fish
pie plus cocoa between JPue & self. L/O 2100.
WEDNESDAY 10.3.43 388th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. Holiday to day, Japanese are
celebrating 1904 Russian-Japan war. Daily issue
of M & V today (each day so many tins are received and
it amounts to 1 man getting 1 tin every 6 days. I
get mine on friday or saturday). Played two
bridge matches before dinner 1220 and lost both
Dinner rice and gravy plus some curried shrimps
from Capt Sinclair. Read and slept until 1600
then had a hot mug. Tea 1700 vegetable pie, gravy
and a fish pie. Traded 1pkt of tea for 2½ issues
of rice. Played a friendly bridge match after tea and
yarned to Capt. Sinclair until roll call 2000. A
blackout tonight read until L/O 2100
THURSDAY 11.3.43 389th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. On picquet 0030/0200. Went to
the M.O last night; although my ear has stopped
aching, I am practically deaf in my right ear
0820 working party 15 docks, after 14 days absence
I feel like a stranger. Loading iron trucks again.
Dinner 1200 rice and gravy. A nice spring day,
Cec and I dug a shelf in the bank and basked
in the sun. Heard that Aust. had been invaded
by nippon (a wild furphy I hope). Returned
to camp 1715, tea 1730 rice (saved till tomorrow) and
gravy, plus 2 chocolate apple and rice pies that
J Pue made. To canteen for squad order of 4 tins
of pepper at 85 sen each (excellent.) Went on sick
parade 1830, my ear cannot function and the M.0
says it will probably discharge and get better. Played
bridge until roll call 2000. Supper of fish and
rice pie, read etc until L/O 2100
FRIDAY 12.3.43. 390th DAY P.O.W
ReveIlle 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. 0820 Docks working party, loading
iron trucks again, a beautiful fine day again.
Dinner 1200 rice (as no rice day issue), roll and
gravy. Returned to camp 1700, wash etc. Tea
1730 vegetable pie, boiled fish and gravy.
As from today no more bread rolls. no issue of
bully beef today (I hope that I have not missed the
Aus. Gave Capt. Sinclair a book keeping lesson
then roll call 2000. JPue made a curried
pie and fish pie for supper, L/O 2100
SATURDAY 13.3.43. 391st DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc. b'fast 0715
rice and gravy. 0820 Docks working party, Loading
iron trucks and sun baking when not working.
Dinner 1200 rice and gravy. Returned to camp
1700, wash etc. tea 1730 gruel(cocoa & sugar on it) and
an excellant thick gravy. Reserved our March issue
of cocoa and sugar, 1/2 lb cocoa and 1 lb of sugar ^and a toothbrush you
can imagine how thrilled we were. Also received
my weekly tin of bully - beef, a tooth brush and a
set of ear-muffs from the Docks. Yarned to
Capt. Sinclair until roll call 2000. Then had a
rice and bully beef pie plus curry. Our larder
now contains bully - beef, curry, pepper, salt; margarine
cocoa and sugar, not had for P.O.W. L/0 2100
SUNDAY 14.3.43 392nd DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 wash, bedmaking etc
b fast 0715 gruel (plus cocoa and sugar) and gravy.
Also a darned good cup of cocoa. Had a shave
and hut clean up. My ear still refuses to
function. Gave Capt Sinclair a lesson until
1030 and when I finished, he made me a cup
of cocoa. Dinner 1200 rice and gravy. Played
another bridge match in the hut knock out
and won (a bridge match in the hut once a
week). Had a hot tong at 1600 wrote a b/keeping
lesson out for Capt Sinclair. Tea 1715 rice, fish
and gravy. Had a choc rice pie and a bully
beef rice pie for tea. Played solo with Chook
and another officer (Cec and P) until roll
call 2000. Bedmaking supper of cocoa
and a fish pie L/O. 2100
MONDAY 15.3.43 393rd PH P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast 0715
rice and gravy. 0820 Docks working party loading iron
trucks. A Jap artist is in the Docks job sketching and
painting individuals and scenes. Dinner 1200 rice
and gravy. Dug a shelf on the back and sun baked
when not working. Returned to camp 1700 wash etc
tea 1730 veg. rice and gravy. managed to get a copy
of Carter's Advanced Accounts so my class will now
function. Played a bridge hut knock out match
and won. Roll call 2000 then a grand supper
of a rice and margarine pie with a thick chocolate
sauce and a rice (curried) and bully beef pie,
a cup of cocoa and a plate of burnt rice (veg)
gosh I was full going to bed at L/O 2100.
TUESDAY 16.3.43. 394th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc. B'fast
0715 rice and gravy plus burnt rice (which I gave to
Capt Sinclair for the veg burnt rice he gave me last night)
0820 Docks working party. Another glorious spring
day, quite warm 570. Loading iron trucks again
and had several naps. The Jap. artist is on the
job again. Dinner 1200 rice and gravy. Returned
to camp 1700, wash, bedmaking etc. Tea 1730 rice
(veg), gravy and fish. JPM bought a pen and
pencil for ¥ 25.00. I had a chat with an officer about
the accountancy class I am taking, starting on 18/3/43.
Gave Capt. Sinclair a lesson and he gave me an
issue of burnt rice again and his tea rice which
he could not eat. Roll call 2000 then a supper of
fish and rice pie, rice and marg. pie plus chocolate
and a cup of cocoa, to bed well fed L/O 2100
WEDNESDAY 17.3.43 395th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 on puquet 0330/0500. Wash
bedmaking etc b'fast 0715 rice and gravy. 0820 Docks
working party. A beautiful day. Loading iron trucks
and had a good sun bake, got quite burnt. Dinner
1200 rice and gravy (at the docks JPue & self only
eat the jockey on the rice and keep the balance
for supper). Returned to camp 1700, bath, bedmaking
Tea 1730 rice, gravy and a small curried veg. rissole.
Played bridge after tea until roll call 2000. Then a
supper of a rice and bully - beef pie, a rice and
margarine chocolate pie and a good cup of
cocoa. L/O 2100. Capt. Sinclair gave me a bowl of rice.
THURSDAY 18.3.43. 396th DAY P.O.W
It looks as if your diary will last for 400 DAYS P.O.W. Then
I will have to use a pad, not for long I hope. Reveille
0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc. B'fast 0715 rice
and gravy. 0820 Docks working party. Loading iron
trucks. The unloading party went on strike (yes
even though we are P.O.W) from 0930/1115. We loaded
2 trucks and then dinner 1200 rice and gravy. It
rained a few drops (only a few) and the men protested
(yes actually did) and we returned to camp at
1400. Played bridge until 1600, bedmaking and
read 'Old Pylius' till tea 1715 veg. rice and gravy.
To canteen after tea for cigs. 2 pkts 20's per man at
23 sen ea. My first book-keeping lesson to 4
officers 1815/1950. Roll call 2000 then a grand
supper of a rice, curry & bully beef pie, a rice & marg.
chocolate pie and a cup of cocoa. L/O 2100.

FRIDAY 19.3.43 397th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. It rained cats and dogs last
night so am wondering if we will be going out;
0820 Docks working party, very wet underfoot but we
worked all day. Loading iron trucks. Dinner 1200 rice
and gravy. Returned to camp 1700 wash etc tea 1730
rice, fish and gravy. Made a chocolate pie and a
bully beef pie for supper. Took my first Acctg class
at 1815 with four officers until 2000. Fires cease
tomorrow so our cooking is awarie. Capt Sinclair
bought me a cigarette pipe for 70 sen also gave me
a portion of rice. Roll call 2000 Supper then L/O 2100.
SATURDAY 20.3.43. 398th DAY P.O.W.
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640 bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. 0820 Docks working party. Loading
iron trucks, a beautiful spring day, had a few hours
sleep on the bank in the sun. Dinner 1200 rice and
gravy. Returned to camp 1700 wash etc tea 1730
gruel, gravy and some curried shrimps (Capt Sinclair
made the latter for me.). Made a curried rice bully
beef pie for supper, had a shave and at 1830
went across to Capt Sinclair for a chat; he made
me a cup of cocoa and we yarned about Indian
curios for your china cabinet. A Sgt in our
squad is going to type all my book keeping lessons
for me, so I shall be able to give the officers a
typed copy. Roll call 2000, supper bully beef
pie and a cup of cocoa without sugar (our
sugar is awaried. L/O 2100
21.3.43 SUNDAY 399th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. Read until 0900 then had a kit
inspection of Japanese issue equipment it dragged on
and off on the parade ground until dinner 1230
rice and gravy. Had a chat with a couple of my
b/Keeping officer pupils. Played a bridge match and
to canteen for 30 apples ¥8.60 worth of ham for the
squad. Had a tong at 1500, washed some clothes
and made a bully beef, rice and curry pie for
supper. Tea 1700 rice, gravy, fish and ham (a
small piece costing 26 sen). A concert after tea (monthly)
the Japs always look forward to it. 1800/1945. Roll call
2000. Supper of cocoa and a rice, bully beef and curry
pie. Yarned to Capt Sinclair 2030 until L/O 2100.
22.3.43. MONDAY 400th DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast 0715 rice
and gravy. Rained like blazes last night and today
there were showers so work was declared off. Played
bridge until dinner 1200 rice and gravy. Played
bridge until 1600 then had a yarn and a cup of
cocoa with Capt Sinc. A small sugar issue from
the Japs today. no more fires. Wrote out some
book/keeping lessons (a Sgt types them for use)
and distributed them to the 4 officers. Tea 1730
rice, gravy, ham. Bedmaking and then
my b/k class 1815/2000. Rollcall 2000 then
supper of cold rice and cocoa. Yarned to Capt
Sinclair until L/O 2100 also had a chat with
a couple of officer b/keeping pupils.
23.3.43 TUESDAY 401st DAY P.O.W
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy. Yesterday morning we were
weighed, mine was 61 Kilos or 9.11, so not so bad.
0820 Docks working party loading iron trucks.
A strike took place, the men refusing to load
the trucks fully, our officer, the interpretor and a
Jap nco came out from camp and the men said
they were not getting enough rice, had all our
numbers taken so will probably hear more
about it. Dinner 1200 rice, burnt rice and
gravy. Returned to camp 1700, wash etc tea 1730
rice, gravy fish, fish bits so had a good do.
Pay parade 1800 (¥ 1.35). Sick parade 1830 re
my ear. I have a blocked eustaceon tube and it
will take its course. Yarned to Capt. Sinclair until
roll call 2000, bedmaking, supper rice, cocoa, chocolate
over the rice and a tin of M&Y (issued tonight), also issued
with a tin of bully between 2. L/O 2100.
24.3.43. WEDNESDAY 402 DAYS P.O.W.
Reveille 0630 roll call 0640, bedmaking, wash etc, b'fast
0715 rice and gravy A day in for my Officers B/K class
I gave a lesson 1030/1200. Dinner rice and gravy
Another lesson 1330/1500 finished lesson No 6. Had
a hot tong at 1530, yarned to Capt Sinclair until tea
1730 rice (veg.) gravy and soya bean milk. After I
felt a bit off colour (the runs). Yarned to Capt.
Sinclair until roll call 2000. Then supper of
cold rice and some bully beef. L/O 2100.
Well mine own my diary now goes to a
new book and I hope that I do not
use too many pages.
