cold it was. Resting in hut this morning when the
Jap. CO of this camp ordered us to walk around the
quadrangle, this we did and were promptly
tacked on to a squad of officers (those who
refused to work) and we were drilled for
an hour and we (the sick) were only dismissed
when it was impressed on the Jap major that
we were not capable of drilling. Dinner 1200

afternoon I made another pie, the same as
yesterday (apple charlotte) and I will probably
participate tonight. Read until tea 1730 rice
gruel, gravy and pie, I enjoyed my first full
meal for some time. Up to date the jobs around

take place. I will leave all my thoughts etc till tomorrow
and will then pour out my innermost feelings to you.
Last night, a couple of chaps sat up all night and made
a xmas pudding (rice of course with saved apples
and breadrolls). All sorts of talk about "where will
we hang our stocking". Breakfast 0730 rice and
gravy. Luckily I drew a day off working parties and
spent the morning reading and w/up recipes. Made
myself a small veg. and rice dish. Dinner 1200
rice and gravy. 4 of our chaps were brought up
before our own C/O for being under the influence
last night at 2400. (Some saki came in with the
stores for xmas and the chaps admit that a Jap officer
gave them a drink) can you beat it. Had a shower
at 1400, played solo until 1630, then read until tea
1730 gravy, breadroll (a new kind) and burnt rice
Today our own officers (5) accompanied by Jap Officer
and guard went to the cemetery and laid 3
wreaths on the graves of those P.O.W from this
camp who passed away. Great concert rehearsal
today for tomorrow. Well mine own 1800/2100 all
my thoughts were with you, you will never know what
a heartbreaking separation this has been for me, but
I know only too well what you are going through
too, so till tomorrow mine own, goodnight and
God be with you to give you the courage
and faith to be "chin up and smiling".

TO PEG - MY WIFE
                                         NOTES
"FOR HONOUR AND FOR HER"
Somewhere a woman, thrusting fear away
Faces the future bravely for your sake
Toils on from dawn till dark; from day to day;
Fights back her tears, nor heeds the bitter ache
She loves you, trusts you, breathes in prayer your name
Soil not her faith in you by sin or shame.

Somewhere a woman - mother, sweetheart, wife -
Waits betwixt hopes and fears for your return
Her kiss, her words will cheer you in the strife
When death itself confronts you, grim and stern.
But let her image all your reverence claim
When base temptations scorch you with their flame.

Somewhere a woman watches - filled with pride
Shrined in her heart, you share a place with none
She toils, she waits, she prays, till side by side
You stand together when the battle's done
O' Keep for her dear sake a stainless name
Bring back to her a manhood free from shame
