4th July, 1946.

Dear Mrs. Smith,

I wish to advise that information has now been

received from the Headquarters of our organisation in the field,

that the reburial of your husband, the late WO 2.  D.F. Smith,

has been effected, and he now rests in the Thanbyuzayat War

Cemetery, Burma, Plot A3, Row C, Grave 7.

The Units responsible for laying out of these

War Cemeteries are fully aware of the great responsibility

entrusted to them, their one desire being to create a resting

place worthy of the great comradeship that existed, and a

monument to the courage, unselfishness and patriotism of the

men who have given their lives in the service for their country.

Might I conclude by assuring you of the relevant

treatment and care of his  grave for all time.

Yours faithfully,

W.H. ALEXANDER

Dear Mrs. Smith,

Enclosed herewith is a photograph of the grave

of the late  VX25593 WO 2 D.F. Smith, 2/19 Aust Div Sigs

who was laid to rest in the Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery.

The Cross depicted in this photograph is a

temporary memorial only, and will be replaced by a

permanent memorial when opportunity permits, which

you may be sure, will be in keeping with the gallant

sacrifice of our men.

Special units, whose duty it is to keep all

War Graves in good order for all time, have been formed,

and I trust that it will be some consolation to you to

know that the grave of your loved one will be carefully

maintained in a manner befitting one who has given his

life in the service of the Allied Cause.

The Staff of the Directorate join with me in

expressing sympathy in your sad loss, and, should you

desire to make any enquiries, you may be assured that

they will receive immediate attention.

Yours faithfully,

AF Bellamy

My Dear Mrs Smith,

After the march on Anzac

Day I went with Major Jacobs

to see our Memorial Tree.

There I saw your tribute to

Dan. It was a wonderful

thing to me that the idea

of the Association, formed by

your late husband's comrades,

and friends provides a means

by which you can , from

time to time, give expression

to your feelings.
As you may know Dan was
with me at Queenscliff. In fact
I recruited him Into the RAE.
When the War broke out and I
was forming 8 Div Sq’s, I thought
so much of Dan that I asked
him to come along with me, as
well as Noel May from the

Artillery. I thought that he
would be in time a good
Quartermaster.

It was a tragedy to us
the fall of Singapore, and we
lost many very fine men. Dan
was one of these. He was a

good soldier and a good
sportsman. We had lots
of fun together in the days

before the War playing Hockey

Cricket and Football. I have

some small idea of how you

must miss him.

After all these years I

want you to feel that you

have my deep sympathy, and

if there is any little thing

that I can do for you

please let me know.

I hope to lay a wreath

on behalf of the unit about

15 Feb next year. Perhaps I

may be able to meet you then

With Kindest Regards

yr very sincerely

James THYER
