Letters of David Francis Smith, January-June 1941 - Part 7
.4.
Had a game of soccer the other night,
or at least I pulled out at half time,
was a bit hot for me, down for a game
of football this afternoon hope I improve
on the other days effort; Noel is playing
in the side, has been threatning me all
day, reckons it will be RAA & RAE,
I wouldnt if it were either.
Well Sweetheart I cant find any
news to tell you for the present, maybe when
I get a letter to answer I'll do better.
''Cheers''
With all my Love & Kisses

Regards to Ma, Pa & Mabel.

My Darling Rene,
Received three letters from
you yesterday. So you will no doubt
guess how pleased I feel, I thought they
were very nice, worth waiting one week
for, glad to hear that you and all at
home are in the best of health etc.
Things haven't changed here with
us any, the A.I.F had a big parade here
on Anzac Day. I didn't see it but from all
I hear they put on a very good show, they
had quite a few photos taken of it so you
will very likely see a few in the Southern
papers.
Noel, Bob & I went out to
Curried Tiffen at some people's place today,
had a very nice afternoon, took us for a
decent drive afterwards, might say that it
was the first time that I have accepted any
invitations, don't care much about those
turnouts, if there are more than 3 or 4 going.
.2.
The millionaire Chinaman had about 40 of our
chaps up at his place again today, he certainly
seems to be a good host, all the boys have
a good time.
Have been able to get a bit of sport
lately. Aussie rules & soccer last week, &
have a game of cricket on tomorrow. I think
you feel a lot better for it, even if it is
pretty hot while you are playing.
Many thanks for the order, you are
wondering what I buy with them, tobacco
mainly.
Am sending that huge cheque back
to you, as I doubt if I would get 2/- for
it over here. Certainly took the crowd down
there a fair while to wake up, would have
thought that they would forward it.
I thought that snap of you was
very nice. I was a bit precious with my opinion
of the hair style, I like it very much, will
get a few snaps taken & send them very shortly.
Love, I wouldn't bother sending any
papers to me except the Globe, as I always seem
to be able to get hold of the others.
Evidently the Womens Weekly gives a

pick them couldn't you.
Cant even remember meeting that new
neighbour of yours.
Glad you like that piece of poetry,
yes it was composed by me of the troops, but
not one of ours, think there were quite a
lot of copies sent home.
Don't reckon I'll every be able to fill
that sports coat out, would be too bad if
I did, perhaps you remember my description
of it.
Mabel would be pleased getting a
cable from Bill, sincerely hope my memory
doesn't fail me, would be better if you are
able to give me a decent dig in the ribs on
that occasion, wouldn't it Hon.
Ken didn't have much of an Annual
this year, wonder if he went our after the
ducks, like we did last time. Must say
that was a classy bit about the Railways
thinking about striking for extra on account
of War strain, lovely isnt it, suppose they will
very like get it too.
Haven't much faith about receiving
Canteen orders from Mr D- that's never liable

to happen.
Very pleased to hear that the chaps
for the Islands got a decent send off, that would
happen in the Q'cliff wouldn't it.
No I wont have this dance business on,
will wait & let you have another go when I
get back anyway. I'm too old to start now.
Will let you know the cost of that
ornament you reckon on, don't care much about
the black ones, the whites seem to be the
better, but will I think cost more. Yes I
would be able to get something for Ma
& Mabel, but would want some idea of
what they wanted, would be able to include
them in that box of yours.
You seem to feel a lot better about me
being in the A.I.F than you did at first,
must say I feel placed about that.
Well Sweetheart I can't find any
news to tell you at present, so I'd better close
up & turn in, no blue bed-spreads either.
"Cheerio"
With all my love & Kisses
