handed over to the Jap Authority they

said he is your Prisoner Look after

him yourself So Our Blokes had

the Nips up & gave them 28 days &

when they come out the Nip will

then deal with them. Had an

easy day & home early Tea Rice

Spud Chips after check Parade &

they were OK. Went over to see Cecil

& then listened to WO McHugh on

Tropical Australia. Talking on Cairns

Porridge which is Bull.

Reveille 12.45AM Bfast Rice & C'nut Oil & Spuds & took a dixie

with us for the voyage. Left Changi 4AM. S'Pore [[?]] 5 to 7

Bfast 8.30. on train. Causeway only blown up on one end

& easily Repaired. From S'Pore Orange Star lights left behind us

Lt [[?]] Coleman in Charge of Truck of 28. Received 50cts from Japs on train

Seg[[?]] & Bridge a Wooden Structure now. Passed Batu Ausin &

[[?]]  [[?]] in New Condition.  Tea Leaves from Nips Rice & Veg

Fish Hash. Places along road cleared up & repaired as if nothing happened

B'fast Rice & M Stew at K.L. 4.20.AM. Slept in Wagon all the trip

Rice & M&C Stew at Ipac & Ipac seems a Rutty decent place & fairly well

Populated Mid day onwards carriage like a Hot box while train is

stationery. Just before Sungai Siput ran over a Water Buffalo.

& cut him in halves. V & T.U Signs very popular with children up here

Ruther is as dense as Jungle & very little vegetable grown up here

in these parts

Tiapung at 3AM & had fish Soup. Also Star 8.30AM & arrived

at Border at 10.30AM & had B'fast & 10 min P.T.

Padi Fields all along route & nothing else. Padang Besan [[?]] are

being trained. Lunch Rice & Pork in Thailand & received [[?]]

Rice & Dried Fish. Surrounded by Thai Guards in Khaki & Green Uniforms

E Coleman [[?]] he is Sick of Journey Rus is a good sport, Have 5 Nip officers in

train & making things hard for us also a Nip M.P. The first bridge is very

weak in Thailand as it has been hit by Something. Elephants carting

Train came in with Truck of Chinese Prisoners. & gave TVG Cannot read Names of

Thai Stations as they are not in English

Arrived Early morning at 4.AM & cases of Eggs lined up a Platform.

& the lads ratted a case. Found the camp very dirty. Thais gave us

Bananas & Cigs & were very good to us. 2/29 Bn were there & they went

out that night. Selling of Clothes was pretty slick as once you got on

the march you couldn't carry all of them.  Shirts $1 -$3 Red Cross Jackets

$1-$3 & in a short time we had a few dollars to buy bananas & Cigs Very

cheap. Search for Guns & Ammo. & that was all they wanted with Electrical

Equipment. Had good Nights rest

Cleaned up Camp & had meal very good & more or less prepared

for our trip. Moved out & have 15 Miles to do with all gear. Bhongs

marched along beside us wanting to buy our clothes as clothes are

very short here. Moved all night along road till day break.

Arrived at rest Camp for 12 hours & found a good River Queen Dye

[[?]] a regular Black Market selling Fried Egg 10cts & anything you

wanted including coffee.  Hired a truck for $80 to carry our gear to the

Next point of 15 Mile.  Moved off with light gear at 7.30 &

had a good trip

Nips Patrolled through the Area to clear out the Bhongs 3. Nips

were done over the Night before. Have to watch your gear as the

Bhongs will Pinch it. A Good night Rest

Rest of Bn moved in very tired & footsore. Meals

good & a fair amount Move out for another 15 mile with

full Pack & at 4PM 1 hrs Rest. Gave Jim Gilchrist a hand

for the Next 7½ miles & made it very tiring. Hired 2 Yack Carts

to carry  Sickmans gear for $20

Arrived at New camp for 12 hrs very close to water again

& have another Black Market there.  Have hired more

carts to carry gear with an extra $5 to carry Sick men ex

we have now 6 hosp Cases. The Bhongs refused to carry

sick after receiving the money so we had to help them along

1 Mile up Road Built by POWS near the new Railway Line

we tried to unload the one wago but the Bhong wasn't having

any so a party of our lads went with the Carts. Helped

Albert Nunn 12 Miles & am now knocked out. He collapsed

5 times in the journey.

Arrived New camp for 36 hrs & had to camp in the open & another

Market there but pretty dear.  One of the Lads said he had a Sprained

Ankle & was humped for 10 mile to get off the Stretcher with nothing wrong with

him. 1 lad missing from trip.  Thais followed us through the

Jungle trip & now wait on men who fall back & then rob them of all

their clothes money etc. Meals light on but slept all day

No4 Party moved in with the missing man minus gear

Boots & hat as the Thais stood over him & took his gear.  Moved

out on a sticky Road & after travelling a few mile Nip trucks

bogged at side of Road. All you do on these Voyages is sleep.

This country is full of Bamboo & to get a fire is quite easy

Arrived at Base Camp & found a big camp there & only

to stay 12 hours. Food fair & still on the River. Convoys of

F.L. Troops passing through all day.  A few Burmese camping

on this river. Now only 34 mile from Burma Border. On way

out. Road sticky & very Hilly. Passed 3 Elephants & the first

the biggest Ive seen.  Passed Camp Buhi where Jock McLellan & Gordon

Jeaves are in a Saw mill Had cup of hot water there

New Camp near [[?]] & stayed there 12 hours. & slept all

day. 2 cases Pnuemonia & the MO. collapsed Night before &

we had to leave him. Passed through big Camp of AIF who gave

us cups of coffee. Coffee made from Rice

Arrived at camp 1 mile from River & stayed there 36 hours

& again have to camp in the open 2/29 Bn here & they have to move out

tonight. Food Poor. Made Water containers out of Bamboo

& all OK. Bought 50cts Gula & Put it down under my clothes & had

a swim & when I came back the Gula had gone

No 4 Party came in very tired on 1st with our old

M.O. No duties all day so I slept Got my hair off as it

is much cooler Moved out & got Wet weather. So dark that

you couldn't see in front of you Jack Bourke fell over

a Bridge & Broke his arm. Nips very frightened of the day

& wanted us to light fires for Tiger Preventative.

Arrived at New Camp 12 hrs stop & only 6o yds off small creek

Light meal for Dinner as we had no containers. Slept all day

as nothing else to do. Had a big feed of Rice before leaving to

set me on the Way. Struck rain again & had to pull up

for 1 hour.

Arrived at Destination 8.20AM & only 50 yds off the River & have

Imp Jap Guards over us & all doing their own administrating

& are very strict.  Meals So far are very Poor but plenty Rice

(No Body) River good swimming. No Tea Issue on &

have nearly exhausted our ow. 2/29 Bn Move again tonight

1 Coy Nips came in behind us. Late for Lunch & tea x [[?]]

No 4 Party came in & fairly tired on it. Rain threatened

through the Night but proved to be fine. We have to move

tonight. we are only a few yds off the Burma Border now

& may cross it tonight. The meals we have been

getting are Rice & Veg Water. The country about here is Timbered

on the hills & Bamboo in the Valleys. The Track we have

been following is an old Elephant Track rebuilt for Traffic

So far have done about 120-140 miles of uphill

& down dale & sticky & slippery. Move out
