for 72 hrs.  Diphtheria & Dysentry broke out in the
Changi Area  7 Chinese were caught with Petrol
outside this Area.  One of these had 16 glns of
Petrol.  Japs on outposts around the Camp
9. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & FM Soup  Out to work at the
WEDNESDAY  Quarry & was on the trucks. A Check
Parade was put on & a few of the lad
on "A4", Archie Dixon was lucky
as we found him asleep & got him
working in the Crusher & at first put
on an A4 but got off it again.
Lt R Meldrum was in charge.  Lunch

Yesterday received 1 lo Jam & 16
Vitamin lollies each.  Tiring day

THURSDAY.  as a general Holiday owing to a
Sacred day at the Shrine.  Rested
all day.  Lunch  Rice & S.A. Soup
Read & finished a book.  Battalian
Parade saying a win for the
British Armies having a written
Order to the Signing of the document.

were very tasty.
11. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup.  Had to March
FRIDAY  out to the Shrine to witness Boxing
Contests between 3.4 & 5 Camps.  The Contests
were referee'd by the Yankee Jap.  They
never had a match for Alf Fulham (Wills)
The Japs had their Sport of JuJitzu which
was more like Catch Catch Khan.  Lunch
Rice & Soup.  Had a sleep in the evening.  Talking
to a lad from 5 Camp telling of 2 Chinese Women
who gave POW's money & food were put in Court.  Made
to strip & walk through the Town  Tea  Rice Steak
Pumpkin Spuds Cucumber & Gravy & a Rock Cake
Yards are turning out 1 Plane in 8 minutes 

 

12. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup.  Out to work to
SATURDAY  the Race Course HQ & had a crook day as
[*PayDue*] the Jap shoot over us all day.Lunch
Rice & Cucumber & Gula Malacca.  Finished
Work 6.0 PM.  Rumour New Guinea fallen
to the Japs.  Tea  Rice & Veg Soup & a Jam Tart.
Had to Sign the Screed under Jap

SUNDAY & had to pull grass. & had an easy day
As my birthday had a very poor B'day

Gula Malacca.  Went to work in the
evening & after working ½ hour came
home & played L/Sgt Lloyd Roberts Cribb &
had a victory of 7 Games to 3.  Tea  Rice
& (M) Soup & 2 Biscuits which enabled
me to use some of our jam.  Rumours
Russians doing well in all fronts.
Still holding Stalingrad, 1 AIF & 1 Pommey
received VC's both Killed.  USA Fleet
somewhere in Pacific.  Raffle for 1 Tin Jam
raffled 10/9/42 was won by George Riley.  Bought
1 Catn Tobacco (Java) for Bice Kennedy $4.20.
14 9 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup  Home today on
MONDAY  Light Duty on O.C. Fatigue.  Have a Waxed
up ear.  Sam Boyle had a fight with Arthur
Martin who lives in Murgan.  He knows
Tom Lawson & Tom Lunn.  Lunch  Rice
& Stew & Cucumber.  Carted Bags of Rice
to our Cookhouse.  Cig Issue 12 London  Tea
Rice & Veg Soup.  Pay Received $1-  Rumour
Andaman Is taken by Allies.  Russians doing
well.  New Guinea & Solomons in our hands.
14 9. 42 While coming home from our Work
MONDAY  Party Lunchtime the Jap (because he
Continued  was called away for Lunch), called Lt Sullivan
over & started abuse him so Sully put up
his fist to bash the Jap who backed back
& started to withdraw his bayonet but
thought better of it for his safety sake.
There has been a good laugh about it.
Singapore will be bombed giving the
Chinese a clue to start.  Also a
Convoy up at KL was attacked
by Chinese (so they say)  Have been
big troop movements here lately
sending up tons of Guns Ammo etc
up Malaya, So I hope it wont be long.
15 9 42 Breakfast.  Rice & (M) Soup  Home & on the
TUESDAY  Jap Working Party to clean out
the M2. New Quarters  Lunch  Rice
& Soup & Gula Malacca.  Nothing to do
all evening & I had a sleep.  Tea
Rice & Roast Mutton Rst Pumpkin &
Spuds & fried an egg & a Rock Cake
One of the lads were talking to a
English spoken Jap & asked him
what he would have for Xmas.  The Jap
said 2 Bottles of Tiger & 1 lb Pork. & if any
get drunk! on 2 Bottles they wont get
any beer for 3 more years.  Some of
the lads got drunk on Samsue.
16. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup  Rained all
WEDNESDAY  morning & no work eventuated.  Played
Cards & had a rest  Lunch  Rice & (SA) Soup
Had a good day watching the MT move
to their new Quarters  Tea  Rice & Veg Soup & a
Jam Tart.  Check Parade by o/c & Adj. 

 

17. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup  Out to work to
THURSDAY  the Road & had a hard day.  They gave
us a talk near the road & noticed Ammt
& 5 Planes Painted all colours.  Moved
up North  Lunch  Rice & Cucumber & bought
Pine Slices.  Worked hard all day & had
to finish the task.  At the end of the
evening had to unload the trucks & had
Clay thrown at me 12 pces & the last one
hit me & then the Jap hit me over the
ears.  My time will Come. Finished
Work at 6.30pm.  Captn Oder has gone
away & a new Jap Officer has taken over.
Tea  Rice & Veg Soup & a Pumpkin Pasty
All I had was the Pasty as I was
too tired to eat.  Some of the #5 Camp
have come to our area. & one of my
old mates are amongst them (Mac)
Snow fried 2 eggs each & were OK.
Things turned out OK tonight, &
a little rain eventuated & the frogs
are now croaking, Repatriation Ship
arrived from England & India & the
passengers were up at the Shrine

FRIDAY  a General Holiday & had a sleep &

Had a bowl at Cricket & a lay

SATURDAY.  & had a tiring day on piece Work.  Jap Sailors
came & paid respects to their dead.  They
march to the end of the road.  Take

Continued  Lunch Rice & Potatoe Chips  Finished work
at 4.30 & had to wait to load the tools on

a Puff Delunne.  SYANON TIMES SAYS Street fighting
in Stalingrad.
20. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & M Soup  Out to Work to the
SUNDAY.  road & worked fairly hard.  Lunch  Rice
& Soup & Gula Malacca.  Hundreds
of Jap Troops & Cars visited the Shrine.
Home at 4.30pm after finishing
the Task  Tea Rice Rst Mutton Baked
Pumpkin & Spuds & a Rock Cake & fried
2 Eggs each (Snow & I)  The Repriation
Ship brought in 2,2000 Tons of Clothing
also Also Cigarettes & Maize meal which
we will get later on.
21. 9 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup.  Out to Work to the
MONDAY  road, & worked with No 6 Group (AASC).  More
troops visited the Shrine again today
Lunch Rice & Cucumber & Gula Malacca
2 ambulances went up with Jap Nurses
to the Shrine.  Snow Theodore says they had
good features & wide Hips, Finished at
2.pm  Tea  Rice & Veg Soup. & a Cocoanut Tart
Rumours.  Russians have retaken
more streets in Stalingrad & also a hill
& advancing on all fronts.  No fighting
in New Guinea, Britain has new 8,000 lb
Bombs & proved effected.  Bought
8 eggs & will have 2 each for Supper
Snow Theodore & myself.  Have
been living too high with all
the Banana Fritters & Curry Puffs.

TUESDAY  the road & rained on the way out there
& was half way home on the trucks

& was brought back to work.  Pte. [[Imaret?]]
& Pte Siddle were caught in the MT Park
Milking Petrol & Imaret fell back &
has a fractured Skull.  Pte Siddle is at
Changi Gaol with Sieks.  Lunch Rice & Soup
& Gula Malacca  Finished work
early Tea Rice & Mutton Rst Pumpkin
& Spuds & a Cake (Biscuit) & fried 2 eggs.
Battalian Parade with regards to Petrol
& was lectured on the Subject.  Cpl Breanton
who was shot by Siek Guards at Changi
was moved about in different places
for 2 hours & then shot in the Stomach
& called them Rotten B_. & crook shots
& told them to come closer.  Then shot
in the Groin. A Siek Officer took one of
the Guards Rifles & had a shot himself.
He tried to get Pte Gale off but could not.
They are taking ½ of our Rations from us but
Mjr Tracey is trying to get them to lift the punishment.
On the way to work I noticed 3 Navy Trucks with
their radiators pushed in  They had run into each other
Received 13 London Cigs & 1 Piece of Soap
23. 9. 42 Breakfast Rice & Veg Soup.  Out to the Road
WEDNESDAY  Job & worked with No 6 Groups & finished
Work  12.0 N  Lunch  Rice & Soup & Gula Malacca
Had a nap in the evening as ½ a day off.
Tea  Rice Mutton Rst Pumpkin & 2 Biscuits
& fried 2 Eggs.  Got my Torn Dollar changed.
24. 9. 42 Breakfast.  Rice & Veg Soup  Started out to work
THURSDAY  to the Jap House but owing to the rain
we were dismissed on account of it.

Had a

of $1 & 5cts to Changi Sick Fund & 5 cts
to the Xmas fund.  Tea  Rice & Veg Soup
& a Rock Cake.  Bought another Stick
of Gula Malacca 25 cts for 10.  Played
Poker & won 55 cts.
25. 9. 42 Breakfast  Rice & Veg Soup  Jap Holiday
FRIDAY  & was on fatigue making a Sports
Ground  Lunch  Rice & Veg Soup &
Gula Malacca  Work again
& finished 4.30 Pm  Tea  Rice & Mutton
& Rst Spuds & Pumpkin & Rock Cakes &
2 Eggs. & am very full on it having
eaten Curry Puffs & Banana Fritters
of the Kids who come around

Jap Repatriates arrived from Aust.
I noticed one who had a laundry
