Letters between Malcolm William Keshan and Dorothy Williams, 1942 - Part 17
sleep in the little single bed and you have no idea how I
hate that little bed Mac. We just don't co-operate or something.
Anyhow I wake up feeling cramped and cranky
and not my usual sweet self at all. Of course you don't
expect me to believe you're sweet in the morning - go on and
say it! You ask my Dad - go on - he'll tell you what a
sweet child I was - am - in fact I'm so sweet that every
morning he brings me in a rosebud - true and honestly
he does. Mac darling would you bring me a rosebud, every
morning - if I was sweet - huh? Gosh you never say
anything nice to me - bet you just snorted then. There
is a horrid feeling inside of me that tells me Marjorie
(next door) is about to bring me another cup of tea - I
really cannot stand it Mac - it's only just on four too.
Wonder what you're doing right at this 4pm to-day. Maybe
you're talking to the fellows - what you'd be doing if you
were back home now. Tell them no, you wouldn't be with
your girl now but in about three more hours you would.
And tell them that's straight from the horse's mouth too.
I like the sound of that 'your girl' - must write it again
soon. Don't think me quite mad Mac - it isn't a serious
complaint I have - lots of people have it - and what's more,
like it. Well dear Mac I do hope you are well and getting
plenty of mail etc. Look after yourself now, whatever you
do. It won't be long before you'll be home again, I'm sure
of that. And then! Love from all the family and Betty of
course. She still thinks you're pretty nice, but of course
she would - she's a friend of mine. Cheerio my sweet. Lots of
Love - "Your girl" Dorothy.

My Dearest Mac,
Just home from the break-up party for Physi, and the
family are all away at the pictures so I'll take advantage of
the peace and quietness and tell you the news of the week. First
of all, guess what? Right! Another letter from you - with another
photo too. Gee it's great to see that grin of yours again - just my
favorite grinner thats what you are Mac sweet. The letter was
dated Sept 8th by the way. I'm glad you received so many of my
letters and at long last a photo. By now you'll have lots I suppose.
Were you a hit as the leading lady of the show? I'd love to see you
all putting over the show - you must be terribly funny. Now I am
wondering what you are doing in your new camp. There hasn't
been a letter from you since you've transferred; I hope you're
well Mac and have plenty to do to while away the time.
Mum laughed when I read the bit of your letter telling me not
to go running down my photos when I send them. She said why
don't I tell the truth and tell you that really I think I'm
beautiful. How d'you like that - my own mother too. Let's
go back to your photo though Mac - its so nice - does something
to me. And I'm not referring to the other chaps in it either.

I just can't think what would do that can you? (Much!)
Don't worry darling, I won't go getting blue - not very often
anyway. Sometimes things get a bit down and I think of you
and the times we're going to have together and that makes
the world much brighter. It's good fun lying in bed at
night and just planning and wondering, and its become quite a
pastime of mine. Wasn't it nice of your mother to say that
about you being lucky I mean. Of course George had some
wisecrack for that as you can imagine but I didn't care,
'cause I was so excited about your letter and photo that nobody
could get me mad that day. See what you do to me. Mac
I'll probably be seeing your mother before Christmas so I'll
wish her a happy Christmas for you shall I? Golly we did
count on your being home too - but still there are plenty
more Xmases aren't there and it won't be so long now.
Look after yourself that's the main thing - don't worry
about us here at home - we're doing fine. Don't feel
too lonely darling. I know photos arent so very much,
but even so it's wonderful getting those. Lots and Lots of Love
my Mac, chin 'way up remember - and tuck this in
your cap. Even though miles of land & sea separate us,
still you're always here with me in thought and
I'm loving you every moment. I always will Mac.
Dorothy
