all. Have had a Hell of a
day with Japs as a result.
Meal Sugar, gee & split peas
in from South Africa.

2 THURSDAY Holiday. Put on
a sports day with soccer
matches and a game of
baseball

3 FRIDAY Jess' birthday.
Singapore for yeast & sports equip
no 3 & 5 camps with pay.
Opened a tin of crab I have had
for 2 months as a celebration.
4 S SATRUDAY Nice birthday gift.
Stacks of comforts arrived.
Milk, beef, meal, cigarettes, lime
juice cocoa, breakfast food. Tinned
vegetables M & V. Tinned fruit
Lads gave me a party.
M 5 SUNDAY Bishop out to
dinner. Baptised 3 then
confirmed 17. I finished up
as a godfather! Boxed no
5 camp. Won 3 - 2 .

6 MONDAY Up until 5 am
with Jap Blitz. Eight men
caught thieving from Fog
Brisbane R/d. Made untold
trouble for the camp

7 TUESDAY MANDI over with
the news we move back
to Changi tomorrow per
book. Tpt provided
for sick & gear.

8 WEDNESDAY The big move
completed and crowd
bedded down in the
old 2/30 blg. Bn now 18/26
and reoganised on a
Bn basis. HQ. HO Coy

15 old 27 Bde block. Have
spent whole day in
conferences both Bde & Bn

10 FRIDAY Had time to play a
cricket match with Bde Offrs
v 3 Ind Corps. Offrs. Won easily.
meanwhile show becoming more
organised and settled.

11 SATURDAY Forming an offrs
mess in an old adap hut
with light food supplies. Met
Reg Newhouse & Bill Melton down
from KL where they had a bad time

12 MONDAY Warned that all fit
less myself and Bn staff to
move to River valley Rd camp.
Previous occupants gone to
Japan.

13 MONDAY A day of preparation
for the gcrowd moving out.
Played mixed Bn cricket Won
145 - 80. Jock Lake v John Eales
back in fold.

14 TUESDAY Very depressed saw
most of the old crowd move
out. then settled down to
reorganise the show. Bn HO
and three coys all full of crocks

15 WEDNESDAY Have been given
a decent job writing the
Bn history so I will have
little spare time from now
on. Had Maj Staples over
for a yarn. (3 Ind Corps) his
Bn had about 30 survivors
being knocked about at
Bukit Timah area.

heard some amazing tales

found a fellow chess
player in Capt Gibson

cricket match at Con Depot.
Maj Staples brought Mr
Waite over with piano -
accordian. Gave us a musical
treat.

Nothing of note. A great
AIF Concert at night. Mostly
professionals with an intriguing
female impersonator.

22 WEDNESDAY
Warned of a big Java party
moving in. Japs after
to be moving all troops
from the islands. Timor
Sumatra & Java. Have heard
that Colonial tps will
stay on Island and all
British go North.

for 200 who will be

very clean habits we

24 S FRIDAY Quiet day. At
night went to lecture by Lt
Comd Hammil of U.S.S. "Eauston"
Learnt a lot of navy activities
up to end of Feb. "Perth" sunk"
25 S SATURDAY Played 8 Bde (Ind)
cricket. Got them all out for 47!
(6-13) then rain washed out
play. Church service in
gym with Geo Polain

Lost our first cricket
match since the Bn was
formed. Still there are few
of the old players left.

leaving the island very soon

we are getting another
batch of Dutch troops
in from Java & Sumatra.
Have very little accomodation
or cooking gear for them

though a very mixed crowd.

on Wednesday. 5 days train.

just about finished on a
rice diet again. Getting
worried about the food

who was in Aust for

Armistace. Sunday. A
most impressive ceremony
at the A I F cemetery followed
by a church service at night
conducted by Geo Polain.

day at the dental centre
getting a filling and a
"scale & clean".

DER JONG have introduced
Russian banker that if you
can scrounge 2 packs of cards
is a good time passer - if you
have any time to pass.

12 WEDNESDAY
Listened to a great lecture
by Mike Mavor of 18 Bn on
Drug traffic in Singapore.
He was with the Preventive
branch and talked for two
hours on boarding ships,
beautiful women, opium
dens and cabarets. Has had
many years of this life.

13 THURSDAY Spent the afternoon
watching final of AIF Cricket
match competition. I have been
picked with AIF to play the Dutch
on Sunday.

14 FRIDAY After a busy day
went to AIF Concert with
John Eales. They way they put
it over is a credit to the concert
party. This one special Anzac show.

15 SATURDAY Cricket win for our
team. Concert party put on
a show for Jack Smiths benefit
escorting him to & from the
wicket. Brought the house down

16 SUNDAY A days loaf after an
[[Of Roon?]] at Bde on Sgt Johnston
& Cpl Rockett of 30 Bn over the
stunt that sent us back
from camp 4.

group cricket had an
easy win (19 & 7/7) Lt-Col
Kaffe to mess. Heard true
tale of GOC 's escape.

T 19 WEDNESDAY The Japs have
taken over the canteen which
is a poor show. All goods
are purchased locally and
the Chinese put the prices
up to Hell to the Japs the
result is that there is
practically no stock and
prices very high so our Jap
pay is nearly useless.

20 THURSDAY A letter from Russel
All wkg parties are being
concentrated at R Valley Rd.
Played with Bde offrs & Rest
S got 37 runs (opened up)
21 FRIDAY A Java party of
146 Aussies Incl chaps from
Syria who were dropped
off at Sumatra and there
taken prisoners.

22 SATURDAY Played a Yankee
team baseball and beat
them at their own game 16/6
Possibly the biggest crowd
this camp has had.

23 SUNDAY
Went over to cemetery for first
funeral. Ted Sommerfield
died. Funeral was well
attended and a big team
attended.

of the day trying to get a
few hats for the lads who
have just arrived. They are

25 TUESDAY
Tucker getting bad. Had a
beaut feed of whitebait
and plain rice. Control of
canteen by Japs not as good

26 WEDNESDAY Jess - How true
