Letter No. 4
ENGLISH
Dear Mother & Dad, Bill & John               1/1/43
Happy New Year to you & to
all our friends. Last night we saw the new
year in with a concert in which I, 4 other
Aussies, an English Aussie & an N.Z'er put on
an Australian sketch which went over very
well. Every one was in good spirits & quite
sure that we wont be spending the next
new year here. It is pretty cold here now
but not nearly as bad as the most years
so the Boys tell us, as a rule they have snow
in Oct this year there none untill Nov.
In Nov there was a little which cleared off
after a few days & we had no more untill
yesterday. Dont worry about me feeling the
cold too much, it has been down to 11° below
& I did not find it too bad.
I have not heard from Mrs Grimmitt yet, but
should do so before long, if there is anything
you want to let me know quickly cable
to Mrs Grimmitt & get her to write.
It is snowing quite heavily now but we
dont have to work today so it doesx not
matter. Send letters air mail it might be
a little quicker. Best Love to all
Red

Dear Mother & Dad
I had a letter from Mr Eden
at the beginning of last month & was very plesed
to get it as it is the first one I'v had for
nearly two years. He did not have very much
to say, only that Mrs Eden (Polly) had asked
him to try & find out what had become of
me, & that ^he might be able to send me food
parcels later on, but it is impossible at present.
I'm very sorry it must have been very bad
for you when I was missing for so long, but I
did not intend to be a prisoner if I could
help it, however I was a bit unlucky & am now
in Germany, but I dont think any of us
will be here much longer. My only worry
now is if Bill & John are allright, wish them
from me. I wish I was with them where ever they
are doing our bit, as it is I have to put up with
doing nothing but I suppose that cant be helped.
Dad keep your eye on the stock market & the
possibility of getting land in N.S.W. or Queensland,
as I hope to go in for something like
that when I get home. I am in good health
& hope to be home before long. If you send parcels
send about 4 or 5 bls of chocolate in each.
Best Love to All
Red

Dear Mother & Dad
I hope you are all well at home
as I am. dont worry to much, it has been a
long time. but I have great hopes that we
will be seeing each other again soon. Yesterday
We got a Red + parcel each & in future are
going to get one a week instead of ½ which
as we have been getting, because the snow
held up transport during the winter the
worts of which is now over. There are 12 men
in our room, we pool all food & 2 of us do
the cooking for the room each day. The Menu
for tea tonight is meats roll & bacon & spuds
fried & mashed spuds, sweets, stewed prunes, peaches,
& apples, with custard & a cake made with biscuits icced
with cocoa icing & tea to drink. supper two
slices of toast with magerine & a little german
susage & cocoa to drink. It sounds pretty good
& is so. this is sunday night so we make a feast
of it. During ^the week we dont have any sweets but
have some good feeds just the same. You better
get ready for when I come home, I want all
my birthdays & the Xmas'es I'v missed held
seprately with a week between each one to
recover from the efects. So long, lots of Love
