Dear Mum,
Received a letter from you this
morning, after not having heard from you for
quite some time. I guessed the delay was due
to the fact that you had been kept busy looking
after Gran. She certainly seems to be failing
fast if she has the hallucinations that you
mentioned. Fancy thinking you are the maid.
Who does she think I am - or doesn't she
remember me?
It was bad luck that you happened to
be out when Jack Shepherdson called in.
I haven't had a letter from him for some time,
so I guess I will be getting one in the near
future. He will probably enclose a photo of

his nipper - he mentioned that he would do
that next time he wrote.
Yes, I knew that Murray Trussell was
married on Easter Saturday. I had a letter
from Frank Fisher, - he was best man.
Frank has a job with S.A.L of C Workshops
at Wayville - he is B class, - unfit for
service outside Australia. He and his wife
have a couple of rooms at Parkside and
he lives home - starting work at 8 o'clock and
finishing at 5 o'clock. Babe Fisher is engaged
to a sailor from HMAS. Australia. Frank is
expecting the first of his family next month.
Things have been very quiet up here lately and
up till today the weather has been perfect.
It started to rain this morning and it is still
raining. However, I do not think it will last
long this time as the wet season has finished
up here.

We had a big parade up here the other day.
The Signal Officer in Chief, Major-General Simpson
paid us a visit. Whilst he was inspecting us
he spoke to several of the DR's, including myself.
He had quite a lot to do with us in the Middle
East - he was only a Colonel then, and he
praised the DR's for their work in Greece.
After the inspection, he took the salute as
we marched past. There was a pipe band there
and we marched to the skirl of the bagpipes.
Well Mum, this is all the news at the
moment, so I will say so-long until next
time. Love to all at home.
Frank
P.S. By the way, you wouldn't know something
about a spot of scandal that has been
going on not far from our place, would you?

Dear Mum,
Received a letter from you yesterday,
and I was surprised to hear that you still
had not heard from me at the time of writing.
You should have received a couple of letters from
me by that time.
Thanks for enclosing the cutting announcing
Roth's death, but as I told you in a previous
letter, Jack Shepherdson had already sent me
the same cutting.
I had a letter from Frank Cox today in
which he told me all about his trip to Adelaide.
He said that you made he & his brother very
welcome and that he was pleased that he had
met you all. He seems to think that Uncle
Frank is a hard case - you didn't mention that
2
he was there as well. Frank told me to ask you
about the joke concerning Uncle Frank and the
wine. You must have had quite a crowd there
when Murray & his wife walked in. Yes, I would
have liked to have been there, but I guess that
time will come. By the way, did you show
Frank the photo I brought back from the Middle
East. etc. I think he would have been interested
in them.
I am sending you a "doover" I made up
here in my spare time. Actually, I don't exactly
know what you would call it, but it consists
of a box, on the lid of which is a stand holding
half-a-dozen serviette rings. The whole lot is
made from a bough that fell from a giant
cedar tree up this way. The tree, as it stands,
has 28000 cubic. ft. and is worth £400. It is
one of the sights up here and is protected by the Government. Some time ago a few of the boys were
