ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE NURSING SERVICE REGULATIONS


1. CONSTITUTION.


The Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service shall consist of -
Matron-in-Chief
Matrons
Senior Sister
Sisters
Staff Nurses (Rank of Staff Nurse abolished 1.4.42)


2. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT.


(i) An appointment to the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing
Service is given to a person qualified in accordance with the
following conditions:-
(a) She must be over 21 and under 45 years of age,
single or widow without children.
(b) She must be State Registered.
(c) She must be of pure European descent and a
British Subject.
(d) Application for appointment is to be made on the
prescribed form and is to be accompanied by the
following documents -
Certified copy of Entry of Birth.
Certificate of Training (copy).
Medical Certificate.
Dental Certificate.
Recommendation from a responsible person as to the
candidates character, conduct, education and
general fitness for appointment to the Royal
Australian Air Force Nursing Service.


(ii)

 

(a) A candidate who satisfies these requirements will
be required to under-go a medical examination and
if found physically fit for service, to appear
for a personal interview.


(b) The result of the candidate examination will be
conveyed to her formally in a letter from the
Air Board.


Compliance with the above conditions is essential.


3. Members of the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service shall be

appointed by the Director of Medical Services.


4. (i) Members of the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service shall
be liable to render continuous service in the time of war when required
by the Air Board or the Director of Medical Services or any person
authorised by them or him.


(ii) When not on war service members of the Royal Australian Air
Force Nursing Service may be employed on duty in the Royal Australian
Air Force as approved from time to time by the Air Board.

4. A member of the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service
may except in time of war resign her appointment after three months
notice in writing of her intention to do so.


5. (i) The appointment of a member of the Royal Australian
Air Force Nursing Service may be terminated at any time
by the Director of Medical Services.

 

(ii) The appointment of a member of the Royal Australian
Air Force Nursing Service who marries, or is found to
be married, shall be terminated.

 

6. (i) Except as provided in this Regulation members of the Royal
Australian Air Force Nursing Service shall be retired at the
ages shown in the following table:-


Grade of Member                Age for Retirement
Matron-in-Chief                   60 years
Matron                                    58 years
Members of other grades  55 years


7. A member of the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service when
on active service may become subject to the Air Force Law by operation of
the Air Force Act.


8. The rates of pay are as follows:-


Grade                Daily rate of pay
Matron              15/-
Senior Sister    12/6d.
Sister                 10/-
Staff Nurse       8/6d.


In addition to the above a ration allowance of 1/9d. per diem will

be payable,  and quarters,  fuel, lights and medical attendance will be
provided free by the Department.  If quarters and rations are not
provided a subsistence allowance of 2/5d. per diem will be payable. 


A special living allowance of 1/11d. per diem, in addition to
subsistence allowance,  making a total of 4/4d.  per diem will be
payable when by reason of the performance of duty with the Air Force
a member is required to live away from her home and the Department
considers it to be impracticable to provide her with accommodation
and meals.


Uniform must be of the prescribed pattern and material, and must
be worn according to regulation.  An allowance will be made towards
the cost of uniform.

Service, which constitutes a branch of the Air Force know a s the
Nursing Branch.   The ranks of officers in the Royal Australian
Air Force,  Nursing Branch, are as follows:-


Matron-in-Chief,
Principal Matron,
Matron,
Senior Sister,
Sister (Group 1)
Sister (Group 11),
Staff Masseuse (Group 1)
Staff Masseuse (Group 11)

Deferred pay will be credited to members of the Royal
Australian Air Force, Nursing Branch, at rate for rank on
and from:-


(a) date of embarkation for service overseas: or


(b) date following completion of six months' continuous service.


In respect of the rank of Senior Sister, the crediting of
deferred pay will result in a reduction in each member's maximum
drawing rate of pay by the amount of deferred pay less 1/- per day.
In this case the amount of 1/- per day is thus provided by the
Commonwealth towards the deferred pay credit, the balance of which
is provided by the member by deduction from her active pay.


In respect of members below the rank of Senior Sister, the
credit of deferred pay will be in addition to active pay and
drawing rate will not, therefore, be affected.


In addition to the above, rations,  quarters,  fuel, light and
medical attendance will be provided free by the Department.   If
quarters and rations are not provided a subsistence allowance of
3/- per diem will be payable.   Subject to the prescribed conditions,
a special living allowance of 1/6 per diem, in addition to subsistence
