Dear Old Sweety Heart.
After all we did not
get away yesterday, as per the note
I gave Schuchard to post to you.
We waited about on the wharf all
day & when our transport came
in about 2PM we thought every
thing was OK (except the boat)
About 6 o'clock we were told there
was no room for us on board, & we
marched out to a rest camp for
the night. This morning we hear
we are to go tomorrow & in a
good boat. The Caledonia was
a very frowsy old tub & I'm
jolly glad there was no room for
us. She was very "louzy" & full of
cockroaches as well. I came into
town about 12 o'clock & went
round to see Schuchard at his
2
office but he had gone to lunch,
so followed him up & captured
him just as he was finishing.
He has a Bank a/c here & had
about £60 to his credit he did
not want much of it, so I got
him to give me a Cheque for P.T.
1000 & I gave him one on your a/c
for £10:5:3 to square it. We
have not been paid since 28th Feby
& although Ive got £12 odd to
draw in my Pay Book I cannot
get a bob until we get to our
destination & rejoin the Regt.
A few of us were cut off from
the Main Body having to go in
a different ship. My total
cash assets amounted to 6/ -
until I met Schuchard, would
have been pretty rotten luck
for the Cabin Steward & rather
queer for myself to start a long

sea voyage with 6 bob, which
would probably be a minus quantity
by the time we got on board, as
there is tucker to pay for out at our
rest camp. On the strength of the
tenner I came & had a slap up
lunch here today, which cost
me 3/4 1/2. I have to meet Schuchy
tonight at 6 o'clock if I can
get leave & we are coming in to
see Hugh Bucklers show. He is
playing here tonight. This soldiering
game is wonderful in some respects.
12 months ago I would have
been quite excited over the prospect
of a trip to Sydney, merely catching
the Sydney Express & here we are
on the verge of a far more
momentous experience & it merely
makes one have a pleasant
feeling of anticipation of new
