1918 FRIDAY 23 AUGUST
Oberlin was wounded severely in
the head (compound fracture) and also
left side just above the hip. I was
a few yards from him when the shell
burst & was with him instantly. F.W.
and I applied first field dressings, &
carried him out. I was with Oberlin
up till the time he was put on to
an Ambulance car 1½ hrs. later.
He did not recover consciousness until
the time of his passing away, which
occurred at No. 55 C.C.S. at 4 AM of
the 24th I obtained permission to
leave my post (12th Batt) and at
7.30 pm on the 24th arrived at
no. 55 C.C.S, too late to be in time
for the burial which had taken
place at 4 pm. Oberlin passed away
without regaining consciousness. He
suffered no pain whatever. I have
never seen as more peaceful expression
as was his when I saw him last.
The dear boy is buried at Daours

MEMORANDA
Hondeghem 11/6/18
Just where you stand in the conflict,
There is your place;
Just where you think you are useless,
Hide not your face;
God placed you there for a purpose
Whate'er it be
Think you, he has chosen you for it -
Work loyally.
Gird on your armour, be faithful
As toil or rest,
Whiche'er it be, never doubting
Gods way is best."
MEMORANDA
A Little Place Apart:
A little garden have I made me here
of tender fragrant plants - none bright or gay
and hither shall I come in twilight time
To dream awhile of the dear yesterday.
A little breeze comes whispering from the Past
a magic whisper, wondrous soft & sweet;
I kneel upon the path to closer come
To those dear blossoms growing at my feet
A little scent of lavender, so faint:
And rosemary - and that I pluck & hold
Thinking of you - Death came so soon to you
Another breeze blows by. Tis strangely cold.

MEMORANDA
The Hour
This is the world's stupendous hour -
the supreme moment for the race
To see the emptiness of power,
The worthlessness of wealth & place,
To see the purpose & the plan
Conceived by God for growing man.
And they who see & comprehend
That ultimate & lofty aim
Will wait in patience for the end,
knowing injustice cannot claim
One lasting victory, or control
Laws that bar progress for the whole.
This is an epoch making time;
God thunders thro the universe
A message glorious & sublime,
At once a blessing & a curse -
Blessings, for those, who seek His light,
Curses for those whose law is might.
Ephemeral as the sunset glow
Is human grandeur. Mortal life
Was given that souls might seek & know
Immortal truths; & this the strife
That shakes the earth from land to land,
The wise shall near & understand.

MEMORANDA
Out of the awful holocaust,
out of the whirlwind & the flood.
Out of old creeds to bedlam tossed
Shall rise a new earth washed
in blood -
a new race filled with spirit power
This is the worlds stupendous hour.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
The Nurse. 15/4/18
Dear tender hearted woman, full of care
Rich qualities; a spendthrift in your care
Of those who greatly need,
Searing your heart by Contact with
their pain,
Be comforted, for never yet in vain
Was done a kindly deed.

PERSONAL MEMORANDA.
