SPECIAL NOTICE

Although it has not yet
been published in
Battalion Orders we

are in a position to
state that Xmas Day
will fall on the
25th of December
POETRY
It was Xmas day in the
dugout
And snow was falling fast

So a man pinched 8 more
blankets
To save himself from the
blast.
He thought of his home in
Australia
And it filled his heart
with pain
To think that his next
days rations
Were pork & beans again.
WAR NEWS
The German fleet which
is going to attack Naples
on Xmas eve was
effectually driven off by
our Ally's warship snipers
Several life buoys were
captured.

SERIAL STORY
Chapter V

"Darling" he whispered as he
placed his arms round

her ample waist and drew
her gently under the mistletoe,
"Could you lend me five
francs till pay day?"
"Unhand me villain" she
screamed. The villain
recoiled. (Dunno what
recoiled means but all
villains do it)

Answers to Correspondents
Curious writes to ask :-
Which should it be? The
unexpended portion of the
days rations or the
unexpected portion etc.
Well it's this way, see?

If a man draws his
rations on a tuesday
and then doesn't draw
any more till friday
and then if he gets a

parcel from home on
the sunday, well the
rations he draws on
the monday were not
expended on sunday,
see? That's plain enough.
But if he was to draw

rations on the wednesday
and eat them, well
he couldn't expect any

more could he? Well
in that case I dont see
how anyone can have
any doubt about the
matter.

Editorial:-
One or two of our readers
will perhaps like to know

when the war will be over.
Some people think it is a
Kathleen Mavourneen war
but it isnt. Anagrams
concealed in the Binomial
Theorem, the laws of the
Medes & Persians, and in an
appendix to the rules of
Auction Bridge, all coincide
in stating that the war
will be over on May 20th.
We are prepared to take

500 francs to nothing on it.
The Editor wishes it
to be understood that
if any names or incidents
are mentioned in this
paper they do not apply
to any living persons.
WAR NEWS
Things have been very
quiet on the most important
sector of the Western front.
The only incident of any
note being the complaint
of a lady that someone
stole her fowls last week.
Our uncertain correspondent

states that Bulgaria &
Turkey are sueing for peace.

LIBELS or OTHERWISE

Who is the man who
at last looks intelligent
through bumping his head
on the roof of a pill box?
Who writes letters to his
lady love at 11.30pm every night?
Is Snowy going to try
for marriage leave soon?
Who went looking for
turnips and got a bath
in a shell hole instead?
Is Australian tobacco
going begging in some
quarters?
Is the editor to be invited
to an enormous feed up
now being secretly planned?
Why does a certain Sgt
wear a hunted look?
What odds on the ciment
works again?

NOTICE: The soup kitchen lately situated at
Telegraph post corner has been moved to a new
location (somewhere out of gun range. This move
is not owing to
the fact that some enemy
shells fell in the vicinity but to
enable the sun or the R.T.O's staff
to obtain hot drinks. It is felt that
troops further forward do not need
hot drinks as they always
have a hot time.

very glad if anyone

in the Battn. would

contribute. paragraphs

verses or suggestions

The names of contributors

will be placed under

their contributions if they

paper to represent

the wit & literary ability

of the Battalion. If you

hear anyone say an

original expression, or

see anyone doing something

funny send it on to

us and let all the boys

have the benefit of the

joke. A man who is

selfish with his jokes

is as mean as the man

who wouldn't draw his

pay for fear of wearing

out the money.

AUSTRALIAN NEWS

It is reported that gold

has been found at Bendigo

The people of Ballarat are

very annoyed about it.

The rumour re the

bombardment of Sydney

was started by the noise

made by the 12 inch guns

of the Edina at target

practice.

Senator Pearce is said

to deny that the "Cerberus"

took part in the Jutland battle.

The "Society of Eligible young

men who wont volunteer"

is organising a picture

night in aid of the widows

and orphans of their

one time pals.
Owing to the war the

summer North winds are

not as hot as usual

The duckboards along

Dear Mum

This is a cow of a place,

The cold weather is a fair

cow. Its a cow when you

get chilblains. The cows

put me on fatigue this

morning. It was a cow

of a march. The sergeant

was a selfish cow, he made

me that wild I nearly

kicked the cow. That

cake you sent me, I was

saving it for sunday but

the rats ate it. I hope it

kills the cows. How is

Dad & Bill & the cows.

We never hear anything

about cows here.

We have a reptile
contemporary in the field.
It is called "Peut Etre."
Judging by the number of
bulls in it, it is a real
Irish potato. The artist
should be very careful
of his dates. He was only
200 years out in one case.
It must be rather

expensive to use 8 sheets
of a writing pad when
you really haven't got
anything to say. Still
I will give the rag its
due. Its not so bad
for Officers.
A man carrying a
duckboard, a broken
jar of rum, despatches,
& the company mail
besides many swear
words, was heard to
remark that it was
no wonder Napoleon died
of a broken heart
WAR NEWS
As Chinese troops are
now being sent to
protect Europeans in
towns where the Russians
are disturbing things,
it is probable that some
chows will be sent to
Australia to protect it
from invasion, seeing
that all the MEN are away.
"John Bull" has sent a
correspondent to Italy so
we will probably hear
some good news from there
before long.

LIBELS or OTHERWISE
Did that N.S.W. crowd burn the
chateau because the ditch around
it reminded them of "our 'arbour"?
Did anyone just miss a
blighty, when Mac mended
the automatic?

Wen a sentry halts you
should you give your name,
age, religion, decorations etc?
What's this about an N.C.O.
who halted a patrol and then
did a "movie" picture xx stunt
with a revolver?
Who is continually dreaming
about Fritz, and in his sleep
tries to strangle men in
adjoining beds?
Who said he was going
to commit suicide if he
didn't receive a letter soon?
How many promising
beards disappeared on
New Year's Day?

Who really owns that
primus stove?
What Sgt. Major raves
for hours about the "black
flashing eyes" of a froggy tab?
