Letters from Kenneth Jack Young to his family, 1918 - Part 4
Dear Mum,
Just a line before starting to [[may?]] to let you
know I received (2) very welcome letters
from you just now, I am delighted with the good
news to know you are feeling well again etc
It makes me long to get away back
to dear old Aussie, I’d give anything to get back
to that sunny land, where the war does not appear
to be noticed, it is lovely however to know
that the day will come some day.
I am so pleased they have all been
to kind to you Mum, I received that letter from
Uncle Tom, I will of course write to him soon to.
Mittagong must be a lovely place I'd love it there.
Fancy Connie being so taken with Sydney-- No wonder
Dad & May seemed to be getting on OK anyway
I wish you were staying longer in Sydney though
you seem to think too much of how things are
going without you, Dad & May have been good
too & I know think more of your health than
their own Home Comforts I wish I was there
Now in the old home. Many of us will appreciate
our homes more now.
Well Dear Mum the mail closes
Now tonight so goodbye just now
Very much love & good wishes
Yrs Ever
Ken

Dear Mum & Dad
Again just a few lines, altho' I
wrote just 4 Days ago. But this is Sunday
so like to scratch just a line.
Have not heard yet if I’ll be going
on leave yet. Hope to go on Friday next.
Have written to Mrs Sugars anyway.
The weather is just lovely again sunshine
& everything bright again, the trees are starting
to shoot Now, so I am set, now the Winter is
again over, that was what I was afraid of.
They have just come back from the
Church Parade, I was a hut orderly so helped
to clean up our hut, two hut orderly’s
are left each Sunday to clean up.
No word yet of going in draft.
Yet, there are 3 Signallers (Classified) for the 43rd.
so expect we will be off Very soon now, I
really do not know how far I'll get I am sure.
it is hard to say, I know I am really not
strong enough for the hard trench fighting, but
2.
we never know exactly what we can do.
Will you please send me a few £s
to the Com Bank London. A decent sum I think,
we never know when this war will finish
or I may land back in Blighty wounded
or something of the kind, I don’t want to
be in the same [[fip?]] as Last time . So, I am
going on this leave with just what I managed
to save from the 2/ per day pay. it takes some
saving these times right enough, things are
are so dear, there seems to be plenty
of bread now we manage to buy a loaf now
& again, so that was not too bad.
Must write to Uncle Tom today in
answer to his kind letter, yes he is a good
old chap & no mistake, he seemed quite
delighted at having you Mum, with him.
Have not received any letters from
Aunt Alice, I am sorry she has not been too
well, Queensland is too hot for her I know.
Is it correct that some
people in Aust are playing up, with returned
soldiers & others, attacking them etc, I have
heard all sorts of things, it makes me wild
To think of it, I'd like to know the full
strength of it, so try & give me something of it
3
I am enclosing some of those wee photos you
were asking for Mum, also Battalion Colours
which I have. I know you like these things.
I hope to get some more photos after a bit
Hear the 8th 43rd are expected here
today, or very soon. Wonder if they are
from S.A. doubt it. A young Sexton is Down
at the TB (Training Batt) he was in camp as
Sgt in Aust. so believe he is one of the Sexton
family from Croydon.
Well Dear Mum & Dad I must
conclude.
Will write again in a few days time
Trusting all is well
Very much love to you both
Yrs Sincerely
Ken, XXXX
