Letters from Kenneth Jack Young to his family, 1917 - Part 22
3.
Wish to goodness some maiL would turn up, Now,
but perhaps my maiL wiLL turn up very soon Now
By the papers, the war wiLL continue perhaps
for 12 mths from this, but reaLLy I don't think
it will last that long, (do you?) of course we
Know quite well now the The Yanks have started
they wont puLL out till they have put some force
into the thing, not a little bit likely, is it?
they seem to be spending millions now, So of course
the ALLies intend making a job of it, - peace will
-come - we wiLL aLL know - when Germany, is properly
beaten, it would only be a "patched" up peace
as things are Now, we reaLLy could not feel
quite satisfied for them to let the Huns off now,
now could we? & why should we either, not
if I had to go to France Now, would I wish
for that, as much as we aLL long for Peace, &
glory only knows I am sick of war war war, its
enough to get on your nerves, at times, but it
is Not going to worry me of course, that would
be the Quickest way to the pack, Italy has
had a good set Back, Venice will not faLL
I am certain, I feeL too confident in our Allies
for that, in spite of how things looks today.
Russia seems to be "Napoo", good job too, they
4
with Be perhaps glad to fight for their Country some day
Have they shot those wharf lumpers yet?
in Australia, aLL these chaps here, are dead
against them, I wish for, conscription, we are
aLL voting for Conscription this time, last time
few soldiers did, in spite of what Australian
press said, they were against it last year I
know by what the soldier chaps said, the
Shirkers are on their last rotten legs, & their time
is short in Australia Now. I know Deserving
Cases wiLL be exempted, our Government is Not
too hard, in fact too easy, ours is a great
Country, & these chaps are shielded behind
The freedom of the Land, this war is No play
& no able bodied man is able to Keep out
of it, I don't believe they can either, its a hard
go, isn't it? I've been lucky that's my case, but
its not time to sing a song yet, I'll have to
face the thing again before long, as others are,
and have done for 2 years, or more, Perhaps
you wiLL think I am not writing, a very newsie
kind of letter Mum & Dad, but you wiLL have to
excuse this, as I have - nothing much of
interest to write about when I receive some
of those letters from Home, I'll be OK again.
5.
This is Sunday evening stiLL in isolation, as I mentioned
last Sunday, I've written every week. Never miss, & I
know you never miss writing to me.
Last right I was dreaming of you aLL at Home,
It was Not the Best of Dreams, but perhaps such
Dreams -mean good, I'm not worrying anyway.
I was just thinking is it my Birthday in Less
than a month last year I wondered, "where
wiLL I be next Birthday," perhaps I've had a
different time and been about, altogether different
to what I expected then, this was at Stenwerck
France, a few miles from Armenieres, where may
has here Little Francais Ami, it is rather nice.
