Letters from Alexander Sutherland Mackay to his Family, 1918 - Part 7
France
1/8/18
Dear Mother,
I received one stray letter from
Elsie last night dated 9th June. The last I
got were about the 9th of May so evidently
our Aussie mail is knocking round somewhere
Things have been very quiet until last
night when Fritz got out of temper over
something, he shelled a good deal & also
came over bombing. Luckily we only had
one casualty here, a fellow getting a shrapnel
pellet through the leg. Our Wagon Lines
caught one egg from his planes, resulting
and about 40 horses being knocked, but
fortunately not a man was touched Isn't
the news splendid of late. Our fellows are
all jubilant & prophesy the beginning of the
end. I certainly think they have him
nervous now but afraid the final round
won't take place this year Yesterday I
got a parcel from Mrs Mott containing socks
& tin of cocoa much from Vera Duncan, a cake
It was very good of them Mrs Motts'
socks are beauties. What a great invention
that Tennis Court is at home, it provides
great sport for everyone & must save you a
lot in entertaining visitors. Glad to hear
Mother that you are getting the Gas laid on
& a Gas stove. I hope Roy continues to keep
his eyes open for any conveniences which will
save you & the girls needless work. He neednt
hesitate about my account for anything necessary
Well mother I'll write again in
a few days.
Love to all
Your affect son
Alex

Dear Roy,
Last night I got Elises letter 18th May
Lil's 20th May Elsies 25th May, Lils 28th May, Elsie's
31st May, Yours of 4th June Lils of 5th June. These
are all written before the one I got from Elsie
about a fortnight ago. Glad is see everything
is going well at home. The girls seemed dubious
about using my cash for that Gas stove etc, for
goodness sake don't let any such rubbish block
it of any other improvement at home you
want. Use the money as if it was mothers, my
deferred pay will meet all my requirements alone.
You appear to be having some trips round
they must relieve the monotony a bit. Ron
would probably tell you I had the luck to
strike him again, he walked along for some
distance behind our column, so we had a
great on yarn. He looks tiptop. The same
day I struck an old Richmondite, so my luck
was rights in. Our crowd are mobile at
present is we are not settled long in any place
here there in & out, we always appear to be on
the move. Fritz is copping hell all round
so our fellows are naturally cheerful. I've seen
hundreds of prisoners the last few days some
fine stamps amongst them but all apparently
pleased at their fate. Apparently Fritz has given
up all hope of using his planes by day he
keep them all for dropping eggs of a night
I may say they don't forget to come out then
every night regularly you hear them dropping
all round you. Our crowd no doubt are paying
his back areas in a like manner. Luckily
the weather is still holding good the days
are quite hot, too warm for a Tommie Glad
the girls got that letter [[?]], I suppose they
had difficulty in rounding parts of it. I'll send
another as soon as possible. Dad you ever
get a piece of Richtofen's plane I sent you
also some more coins I sent to father?
Love to all at home
Alex
