28 WEDNESDAY
Went out on Parade at 9-30 in
at 11-30. Out again 2.30 in
again at 4-00
MAR. 1 THURSDAY Parade in Morning. shiftedcamp in afternoon fromScots Redoubt (6th) to"Cinque Porto" Camp just behindline

1917 MARCH
2 FRIDAY Still in "Cinque Portos", onWater Fatigue for cooks3 trip a day.
Moved up to "Cinque Portos"
Camp in afternoon.
(Parade in morning) Arrived
in Camp at 4 PM
3 SATURDAY Hours Parade dismissed &told to pack up to go upto reserve trenches. Had Harry,& Ted Crisp over to see me.Ixxedwith new Pay Books
On Water fatigue all day
for Cooks. 3 trips
MARCH 1917
4 SUNDAY
9-30 AM Went on Parade till 10-30
dismissed with orders to pack up
to move up to Reserve trench.
Had Harry & Ted Crisp over
to see me.
Moved off from "Cinque Portos"
Camp at 6 P.M arrived at
Barrier 8-30 PM. On Gas guard all
night 1 on, 2 off, Walked up without
Boot on account of Chafed heels
5 MONDAY
Still at Barrier, Went Souvenir Hunting
in afternoon. 7 PM moved off back to
"Seven Elms" Reserve trench. on Gas guard all
night 1 on, 3 off.
1917 MARCH
6 TUESDAY
Exempt from Fatigues. Still in "Seven Elms"
went to Dr with Heels. & put on
No duties.
7 WEDNESDAY
Still at "Seven Elms". Did nothing
all day. Gas. Guard all night 1 on,
6 off & moved from "Seven Elms" to
Supports in "Gird trench". recently
occupied by Germans

8 THURSDAY
Still at " Gird trench" 6-30 PM
Moved off from "Seven Elms". I moved
up to Supports in "Gird trench"
recently occupied by Germany. Living
in Deep Dugout. Gas Guard
all night. 1 on, on 6 off.

9 FRIDAY
Still in "Gird trench" on
Salvage Fatigue for 2 hours in
morning. On ration Fatigue. from 6-30
to 9 PM Gas Guard all night.
Carrying to 22nd Batt got lost &
was on "No Mans land".
Gas. Guard all
night.
1917 MARCH
10 SATURDAY
Still in "Gird trench". Moved off
from "Gird trench' to Close
supports about 350 yds behind
front line. Attached to Battn HQ
to clean out shaft to Officers dugout
worked till 8.30. Made
dug out of Iron
11 SUNDAY
Still with Battn HQ. Shaft
opened. & then all earth fell
in. Timbered surface up.
MARCH 1917
12 MONDAY
With Battn HQ till Midday.
recalled by Coy Commander
& reported back to Coy attached
to 16th Platoon as 13th Platoon was
full up 7.P.M. moved off from
close supports up to "post" nearby
Coy H.Q. & put on Piquet & Gas
Guard. 1. A.M. Called out as Battn
were to "Hop over" & take trench in front.
13 TUESDAY
2 AM. Battn "Hopped over' & took
trench in Front. No opposition from
'Fritz". 3 AM. occupied trench. Went
in Dugout & had steep. up 8 AM.
had Breakfast. sitting in Dug out
when Whizz Bang landed Mouth of
Dug out. Killed. Mate 'HW Hiels" & another
21st Battn Chap. Killed 1/24th Battn Chap
& wounded 2 more 24th Chap. 2 mates &
self sitting in mouth of dug out Kunked
to Bottom with Concussion. & spatters
with Blood & Flesh of shattered Man.

Mr and Mrs R. Hazen and family sincerely thank you
for your kind sympathy with them in the loss of their dearly
beloved Son and Brother Private Mervyn Hazen, who
was called to the higher service while on active service in
France, on March 21st 1917.
