Nov. 21st
Arrived at Singapore (Keppel Harbor) approx. 0900hrs.
No leave permitted during day.
Entrained for Malacca at about 2000hrs.
Nov. 22nd.
Arrived at Malacca. Spent day settling in.
Nov. 22nd to Dec 6th.
Acclimatising etc. Received our first issue of vehicles
24 Bedfords. and on the 6th took over about 20 Fds
from No2AASC.
Dec 6th
Left Malacca early in evening, picked up troops 2/26th
and proceeded to Kohta Tingi.
Dec 7th
Arrived at Kohta Tingi about 1000 hrs. Bivouaced in
rubber till 2200hrs then pulled out and left for
Johore Bahru. (Left troops at Kohte Tingi. First news
of this area of Japanese Transport movements. Uncertain
whether to believe news or take it as an excuse
for manoeuvers as troops suspected.)
Dec 8th 9th
Arrived at [[Jahin Larkir?]] just after midnight and
slept in truck. Awakened at about 0400hrs by
commotion. War had started and we were introduced
by a display of searchlights and Ack Ack. Quite
a thrill and a peculiar feeling of "So this is the start"
From the 9th to the 17th of Dec. our time was taken up
by work. "B" section was out with other units for
a few days and were "lost" to us until they returned.
"A" section operated as general carriers mainly on
evacuation of [["Nursing"?]] and a bit of Ammo carrying.
Workshop sections drew WS lorries and so were up to
scratch with equipment. 1 Breakdown 1 [[Stires?]] & 1 WS Lorry.
Lived in huts at No 1 ASC till differences among officers
caused us to shift across road and live in tents.
Even by now we were well able to settle ourselves
into circumstances and be comfortable during the
heavy rains peculiar to the country.
Called out of bed almost every morning about
0400 to take precautions against Air Raids
Paraded about all day armed & with Antigas equipment
Packed surplus clothing & personal gear into kit for storage
at Base.
Dec 17th
Moved out en route for Jema Laluang Luang. WS lorry
broke down for about 3hrs. Arrived at Jema Luang
and no trace of section except MPs thought it must
be ours which went out towards Kluang, followed first
"scent" till within 10 miles of Kluang then returned to
a sentry post and slept till morning. Found our position
to be within 3 miles of destination. Bad convoy
work. No instructions left anywhere for stragglers.
Dec 17th to Jan 6th
Camped in rubber, at Kahang. Time put in repairing
and servicing vehicles. Transfer case bearing of
WS lorry cut out necessitating an overhaul of case.
Suspected something like this from first handling
of vehicle but we were not stationary for any length
of time to "pull down & look".
Received 2 parcels during this time. Very welcome too.
Christmas dinner was scrounged pigs, poultry
(missed out on the poultry) pudding, beer &
hampers. Several games of football played
(hot work this) on sports ground of plantation village.
Jan 6th
Took WS section to Senai via Kluang arriving
about 1300 hrs. During afternoon settled in.
Jan 7th
Repaired several vehicles during the morning.
1400hrs orderd to "up camp" and return to Kluang Kahang.
Arrived Kahang 1800 hrs to be informed we should
be in Kohto Tingi (organisation broke down somewhere).
Mixed convoy of Sub [[1KA?]] section & 2/2 MT left for
K.T. about 2200hrs. WS lorry always at rear
and as it was always heavily loaded we
always fell well behind. Arrived K.T.
about 0300 hrs 8th
Jan 8th
Left K.T. with ^2/26 troops about 1400 hrs and
retraced road to Kahang then to Yong Peng via
Kluang & Ayer Hitam. Spelled Bill [[Stiggants?]]
on M cycle from Kuhang to Ayer Hitam as he was
stiff and cold from the rain. Lorry just the place to
thaw out in.
Arrived Yong Peng about 2300 hrs.
Jan 9th
Left Yong Peng early morning for Gemas. Troops
left here and after lunch in rubber we returned
to Tenang arriving late afternoon.
9th to 14th
At Tenang. Experienced bombing of Railway Yards
our first close experience. Foul place our bivouac
area. Rain most of the time and we lived in a
gulley. Had several trips to Segamit for
MT spares etc. Saw effects of bombing raid on
railway bridge which occurred about 1hr before
Jack Gilding & I got there.
Jan 14th
Left Tenang and returned to Yong Peng (war
situation cause of moving backwards)
Jan 14th to 19th
Normal duties as WS section during this period.
Towards the finish Japs hastily landed at Muar
we were well in the "jumps". At Kluang for Laundry
& parts when attempt to bomb road was on. Fortunately
nearest bomb crater to road was 2ft. so no restriction
to traffic. In this country the road is the road
to get off it means the ditch and there's no
side tracking or cuts into the paddock as its
either ditch, rubber, jungle or swamp.
Had experience of plane chasing vehicles along road
our vehicle was one of same.
