506 With regard to this, we think it adr send to you the following statement of the fac (with the outrage upon the Rev. W. H. Cox, missionaries in New Britain, in October, 1914, for waich the Germans in question were punished by the military authorities in New Britain. The first intimation of a state of war existing between Great Britain and was received in New Britain on August me the Rev. W. H. Cox, the chairman of ov dis- trict, was living on the island of Ulu, pour of Mcoko. Some weeks afterwards a German'.ant steame. called the Meklong entered the harbour, and soon after- (wards Mr. Cox was waited on by the captain, who was dressed in uniform He demanded an assurance from him that in the event of any British ships of war entering the (port he would not disclose the secret harbour in which the Mcklong was hidden. He stated also that in the event of Mr. Cox refusing to do this he would be com pelled to take certain other steps. Mr. Cox gave the required promise, and we have his solemn assurance that this promise was never broken. On leaving the island the (captain commandeered a small motor-launch belonging to the mission, and took it with him to the harbour in which the Mcklong was hidden. Ten days afterwards some Bri- tish destroyers entered the port and seized the Mcklons, together with the mission motor-launch, which is still retained by the British authorities as a prize of war. give the above facts because one of the alleged causes for the attack on Mr. Cox was that he had communicated to the British authorities certain information which led to the capture of the Meklong. S. A. Whiteman, ho located the hidden German gunboat Komet, now tn the service of the British Administration at Rabaul. D. Blatheti the Ge implicated in the outrage. By a forced march ir the night, the Wenzel's offering to introduce Mr. Cox, the doctor indulged British succeeded in surprising them, surrounding th in the most violent language, stamped round the verandah, house at 3 a.m. and taking them , isoners. They wer shouting in loud tones, and abusing Mr. Cox in the strong found to be heavily armed, est possible manner. After the doctor had left Mr. Cox In the number C weapons and ammunition decided, after consultation with Mr. Wenzel, to send a Tre evidently pre pared to resist any courteous letter fully explaining that he had never given any information or committed any act adverse to German THE share of the Rev. This letter was sent at once, but before it was 1 simply that of reporting the outrage committe received by the doctor the assault was committed. against him to the British Administrator, submitting him self to examination by the principal British Governmen [T will not be necessary to give details of this cowardly Medical Officer, and also by the direction of the Adminis outrage; it will be sufficient to say that the doctor trator making a formal statement of the facts to th again appeared at the mission house at 10 p.m., pointed a Assistant Judge Advocate-General in Rabaul. Mr. Cox was then dragged forcibly and they had inflicted upon the Rev. W. H. This was accordingly done at Rabaul, in the pre of the party, whilst others who were armed stood on guard sence of the military stationed there. These are the It should be mentioned that the missionary in charge of plain, ungarnished facts of the case, and it may, w the station, Rev. K. A.
