6.35 am. sighted light Empress of Russia
which had been despatched from Colombo
to assist with wounded.
10.0 am. Stopped & Transferred to Empress
of Russia 5 officers & Warrant Officers
all wounded. 32 men slightly wounded.
26 Seriousely Wounded & uninjured and
18 Chinamen
12 0 noon proceeded. Empress of Russia
took station Astern
Captain Gordon Smith the officer in
charge of Convoy. made a signal asking
that Sydney might pass through the
lines of the Convoy. Captain Glossop,
consenting on the Understanding that
there should be no demonstration however
this obstacle was surmounted by arranging
the speed so that we passed through
the Convoy during the Middle Watch
when most of the Troops were asleep.
Nov 15th On the 15th we arrived in Colombo at
10 0 am. & secured to Bouy found in
harbour. H M.S. Hampshire Melbourne and
Russian Cruiser Askold.

be British, appeared off the port yesterday
afternoon and was seen patrolling beyond
the 3 mile limit until dark, but could not

March 18th Received news of sinking of Dresden P. > K. A.
Stoddard gave a lecture on the Falkland
Island fight The Gist of the lecture was
as follows.
Admiral Stoddard was in H M. S. Canarvon. and.
should have met the Inflexible & Invincible
on the 24th Nov. but they did not join forces
untill 25th Nov. consequently they did not arrive
at Falkland Island. untill Dec 7th they
commenced coaling and in every way preparing
for a long search previous to this the Canopus
had been run ashore and turned into a
Temporary Fort(in) the entrance to the
harbour. havaving been ingeniously ruined
by means of Oil drums. on the 8th Dec the
German ships were sighted and the action
took place which Admiral Stoddard described
very vividly. Amongst the many interesting
incidents he mentioned was the following
one of the German officers who was picked
up the Sea by the Canarvon asked.
if there was an officer in the British
navy by the name of Stoddard he was
informed that the Admiral of the
Canarvon was of the same name. When
they came to compare notes Admiral
Stoddard found that this German officer
was his Cousine although they had never
met before. but as Admiral Stoddard [[?]]
he was now a prisoner of war he could
not recognise him in any other light
During the lecture Admiral Stoddard
explained how the Kent which had.
