The Commandant
Advanced Base
Anzac.
Enclosing copy of letter I have
forwarded to D.M.S. G.HQ. Lemnos.
With reference to the shelters
or huts for use of patients waiting
for evacuation, I would suggest
that suitable sites be selected and
any preliminary work required such
as leveling, draining, road making [[&c]]
should be proceeded with forthwith,
that arrangements be made for preparing
the wooden parts necessary at the Base
so that they could be erected quickly
on arrival; that an ample quantity
of sheet iron be provided.
The simplest form of hut
would take the form of a carriage of a
Hospital train, say a passage 3 ft wide
with places for stretchers in double row on
either side. Thus a building 56 ft long
7 ft. wide & 6½ ft high would provide
accommodation for 28 patients. Several
such shelters would be necessary for
each C.C. Station.
I regard it as a matter of the
greatest urgency that there should be
no delay in making these arrangements.

The daily evacuations from the A & NZ
A.C. for last month average 338 [[or?]]
leaving out the days of heavy fighting
211. One cannot expect any
decrease in sickness with the onset of
bad weather.
It is therefore essential to provide
the means of evacuation by land
and [[adequate?]] [[of?]]Stationary Hospital
[[?]] [[operation?]] for such period as
evacuation by sea is impossible
As the weather in this locality
breaks up at the end of this month
it is a matter of the gravest
urgency that no time should be
lost in carrying out the necessary
arrangements.
