Turkey,
[*PR82/8*]
I am writing this from the trenches where all day long the shrapnel is
bursting overhead and machine guns and rifle bullets are playing upon the
parapet. Don't be alarmed we are as safe here as if at home with
no noise of war to disturb us. You have heard before this of our
first battle. It was grand and awful, something to live for ever
in one's memory. I cannot describe it to you - a pen picture would
be impossible. All day long the air rocked with the sounds of
bursting shrapnel roar of artillery, the boom of naval guns
It was like hell let loose but it was grand to be there, to
live in the very midst of it. I shall never forget when the first
shell burst over us. The concussion staggered me. I believed that
I was hit. Then I recovered and made for the shelter, behind a shrub
with a stem of about 1½ inches in diameter. That was the first my
baptism. Afterwards I scarcely cared. The following day was the
worst in my short military career. About 4p.m. we endeavoured
to wrest a position from the enemy. Making our advance we were
met with a rain of shrapnel worse even than Sunday's storm.
Once we took cover behind a copse and, but the Turks turned
their maxim upon us. I got out of it. How God only knows, with
a xx splintered rifle stock and my haversack practically cut off
my back. You will understand the briefness of this note. I am in
perfect health and hope soon to be back in N.S.W.
Best wishes and a long letter first opportunity
Yours sincerely xxx
Rolie.
