Dear Mum
I have received no
letters from you lately. I suppose
you heard of a picket boat was sunk
& there was about 300 bags of mail
in so some of my letters are at the
bottom. I would have wrote before
only we have been to busy fighting
on Friday 6th Aug the colonel came
and read orders to us & told us that
the first Brigade was going to make a
charge at 5.30pm and drive the Turks
from the trenches well at 5.30 pm all
waiting for the whistle to go & when
it went every man was over our.
Trenches and the fight commenced.
(II)
within half a hour we had three
line of trenches & driven the turks out.
It was terrible hard fighting the turks
starts to throw bombs into the
the trenches as soon as they landed.
in our trenches we would pick
them up and throw them at the
turks is was living hell dead
laying five & six days in the trenches
in fact you could not walk
without treading on the dead when
you put your foot down you feel
the body quiver under your feet it
was horrible colonel McNaughton
was wounded and refused to be
releaved till this battalion was
releaved we held the trenches till
Monday and our battalion was
releaved for 48 hour rest out
of our battalion there was two
hundred & sixteen men & 4 Officers
(III)
including six lots of reinforcement
& that all we could muster. The
colonel was taken away the next
day poor fellow no mistake he is
a hero his second time wounded.
I was very lucky I was hit on the shoulder
both feet and stomach thank God it
not serious I expect to be back at Mr
turk in a month time as long as
septic don't set in it is my first
trip since I landed I think I could
do with a holiday after four months
solid fighting Charlie Ingry is here
with me he is hit in the forehead
about the right eye & the shoulder
he has about fifth pieces of bullets
in him yet I think he is going
under a operation it will be
a serious one the poor beggar
get no sleep all he is talking
about the pain in his head he will
get over it alright
It is very hot here but is much better
than the Gallipoli well this is all
I have to say at this time as it
