Lance Corporal J. Maguire

to his uncle J M Oneill

Chiswick.

Dear Uncle,

I've been expecting to hear from you for some

time & as a letter was not forthcoming I thought I would

write once again to see how you all are. It is months

since I heard from any of you & I been wondering

what the matter might be I'm sure I write to all of you

regularly enough. Hoping this will find you all well

for myself I am still alive & kicking I've been very lucky

So far as I have hurt [[some?  ??  ]]   escaped there

are not many of the old boys of the first contingent left

now we have had a pretty hot time within the past

fortnight no doubt you'll know all about it before this

reaches you. At 5.30 on an evening about a fortnight ago

we got orders to attack a Turkish position & on the blast of

the whistle we all jumped over the parapet & over we

met with a deadly fire from rifles machine guns &

Shrapnel which accounted for a lot of our boys but

Some of us got there I been lucky enough be

amongst them & then a hand to hand fight in the

Turkish trenches our boys fought like demons & were

not long in driving the enemy but after leaving the trenches

filled with their dead. It was terrible. There were dead

every where & it took some days to clear them out of the

trenches & now we are safely installed in our new

position kindly given to us by Abdul & I don't like

his chance of getting it back again. W'eve been here

now four months & during that time I've never

been to the a doctor & let me tell you we have had a

rough time of it, & I feel like a good long rest

& I think we are all deserving of it after four months

You'll see by the address underneath that I've been

promoted to Lance Corporal. Well dear uncle I would

very much like to hear from you write to me when

You Can. Give my love to Auntie Ciss also Kath

this is all at present with best love from

Your Loving Nephew Jim
