MEMORANDA.
GLASGOW – Cranston’s Waverley
Hotel, 172 Sauchiehall St
JANUARY, 1917.
MONDAY 1st.
Walked to GADS HILL & went through house &
grounds of home Chas Dickens died in, now
owned & occupied by Judge Lathem. Lunched
at the Sir John Falstaff Inn & then went
by motor bus to Rochester & had good look over
the Cathedral. Then inspected Museum, had
afternoon tea, & returned to Cobham Hall by
motor car. Saw I was awarded D.S.O
TUESDAY 2nd.
Walked all the way to Burstal & had
lunch at Revd. Mason's. Was shown over
the Institution for young criminals.
Walked nearly all way home, & had a
snack of bread & cheese & 'Burton off
the wood' at the Three Crutches.
WEDNESDAY 3rd.
Lord Darnley drove Davis & I to Cuxton,
thence took train to Maidstone & had
lunch at Kent County Club. Had good look
around the old City. Padre Maxwell
also with us. Returned by train & car.
JANUARY, 1917.
THURSDAY 4th.
Got 10.8 train to London. Drew £15 a/c
pay & took train Paddington to BRISTOL.
At Bristol went to South Mead Hospital
& saw Gillies, who looked well. Went to
variety show after dinner.
Wrote to NELL.
Stayed at Royal Hotel.
FRIDAY 5th.
Inspected Clifton Suspension Bridge
at Bristol. Left by train at 10.35.
passed through EXETER & arrived
at FALMOUTH in Cornwall at 5.35 p.m.
Put up at Falmouth Hotel. Very
nice place.
Wrote to NELL & MOTHER.
SATURDAY 6th.
Looked about picturesque Falmouth &
left by train at 11.5 am, arriving PLYMOUTH
at 1.50 pm. Put up at Duke of Cornwall
Hotel. Visited Devonport Docks &
other parts.
JANUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 7th.
Inspected Plymouth Hoe & Statue 'Drake'. Visited
Fish Wharfs &c glorious harbour front. Stood on the
Mayflower Jetty 1620 & watched trawlers come in.
Walked around Fort built 1666. Saw bowling green behind
Drake's statue on the Hoe. Saw Eddystone lighthouse in
the distance, & the old one removed & reerected on the
Hoe. Left Plymouth at 2.15 pm & arrived at
Royal Hotel, BATH at 7 p.m.
MONDAY 8th. At Bath.
Cold sleety day.
Inspected old Roman baths & the modern
buildings. Drank the water in Pump Rm.
Walked & rode about the City. Inspected
beautiful Abbey church.
Bought fountain pen.
Left at 2.30 p.m. passed through lot of Snow
Arrived London 5.30 & Sole St. 8 pm. Had
Supper at Leather Bottle Cobham.
TUESDAY 9th.
Stanley arrived at Cobham.
I had 5 oclock tea with the Darnleys.
Mrs Booth also there.
Stanley & I had walk to Cobham.
Got sundry letters.
WEDNESDAY 10th.
General, Lady & Miss Birdwood came
to lunch. I was included in the party.
Afterwards all the officers brought round
for big photo.
Stanley & I walked to Stroud.
Slight fall snow.
JANUARY, 1917.
THURSDAY 11th
Stanley & I walked to Gads Hill & took
bus to Gravesend; lunched there &
bussed back. Shopped for sugar.
Met Lady Darnely in park.
Played billiards on Darnley's table.
Said goodbye to the Darnleys.
FRIDAY 12th.
Took party to R.E. Barracks Chatham
& were motored to Engineer (Fld) School.
Then lunched at R.E. Mess with Brig General
HANNAY, were then shown the beautiful Mess
plate, & the fine portraits. After went
through the R.E. Museum, Then went up
to Horseferry Rd, but Board had dispersed, &
I was told to come again on Monday. Went to
Mrs Baze’s & was hospitably received there.
SATURDAY 13th.
Went down town, lunched at 'The
Old Cock Tavern' & then met the Bazes
at Maskelyne's Mysteries, St. George's Hall.
Cabled home, "Mentioned Commander
chiefs dispatches staying Bazes".
Miss Dorothy Moore of W.A called in the
evening.
JANUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 14th. We went to fine
concert at Royal ALBERT HALL. Excellent
Superb building. Stanley arrived at
Bazes to spend the night.
MONDAY 15th.
‘Boarded’ & given leave till 29th
Stanley & I did some shopping. I saw
pictures of TANKS in action & part
of battle of the Ancre.
Bought D.S O miniature for 45/-

TUESDAY 16TH.
Dimant called. Brt letters
NELL 48,49,50; Geoff 37/8; Doug 24; Let; Taylor;
Mrs Louden; McCluskey; LCR; Hervey; Paterson;

Mrs Baze & I went to "DaddyHad Long Legs". Had afternoon tea at
'Lyceum Club'.
WEDNESDAY 17th.
Met Major Davis at Windsor &
went to see "Romance’
Dined with Bazes at Lyceum Club &
engaged in debate on 'Guilds v
Wage System'.
JANUARY, 1917.
THURSDAY 18th
Dimant Scott’s, Haymarket & Coventry St, p.m.
Lunched with Dimant at
Scotts, & went to see Tankpictures
FRIDAY 19th.
Visited Cook's stores & inspected
my trunk & gramophone from Egypt.
Took out possum rug & scotch flag.
Big explosions at East London
TNT refining factory startled Mrs Baze.
Maid thought it Zeppelins. I saw
flash reflected.
SATURDAY 20th
Lunched at Slaters Peg & went to see
Ponting's antartic films at the
Philharmonic Hall
Got possum rug sent home
to Baze's. Stanley came for
week end. I met Evans at Regent
Palace. Miss Newcomb & Miss Sheepshank
dined with us. Very amiable suffragettes.
JANUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 21st.
Mrs & Miss Baze & I visited Mr & Mrs
MOSSON in West Ealing.
Stanley still at house.
MONDAY 22nd.
Stanley & I went shopping. Met Davis.
Got binoculars at TOWER as present from
Mrs Baze to me. £6-3-0. Chose three
Elliott & Fry photos.
Major Davis & I left Euston at 11.45 pm
for Manchester. I had 5 o'clock tea Mrs Primrose
at the Empress Club, & dined as Mrs Baze's guest
at dinner to Miss Henderson at Lyceum Club.
TUESDAY 23rd.
Arrived Manchester 6 a.m.
Went to Queen's hotel wash & breakfast. Looked
around city per trams & foot. Bough £1-18-5
engineering gages for Geoff.
Left at 12.25 for Glasgow. Arrived at
Central Station Hotel about 7 p.m.
WEDNESDAY 24th.

I am dreadfully bilious; shocking head
& vomiting all morning. Went down
to Kilmarnock & arranged with A.P. Brown
re Noble Resolve Fund. Returned by 4.15 p.m.
train. Camped & had light dinner.
Took Davis out to W.P. Brown's at
Newlands & had pleasant evening.

THURSDAY 25th.
Drumochter Pass 1484 ft.
Left Glasgow at 9.45 & travelled through
Highlands to INVERNESS, arriving there at 4.45.
Had good walk along & across NESS & by castle.
Stayed at Railway Stn Hotel.
FRIDAY 26th.
Spent 2 hrs & lunched at Boat of Garten
Left Inverness at 8.40 & went via
Forres to BOAT of GARTEN. Thence back
N E to CRAIGELLACHIE, & thence via
Keith, Huntly & Kintore to ABERDEEN.
Stayed at Palace Hotel.
SATURDAY 27th.
Went about Aberdeen to Dee Bridge, Granite
Quarries, Marshall College & other places. Left
at 12.30 p.m. Passed over Tay & Forth bridges
& arrived at Edinboro about 5 p.m. Travelled
with Sir Mitchell Thompson, Chairman of the
Caledonian Rly, & at his suggestion put up at the
Princes Street Station Hotel, after dinner at
his invitation spent evening with him in
his private rooms. He Is interested in Vickers, &
other industrial concerns.
JANUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 28th.
Went over Edinboro Castle , visited St Giles
Holyrood, Leith & many places. Left by train
at 10 p.m. Light snow all day. Very cold.
MONDAY 29th.
WROTE NELL No 43
Arrived at Kings Cross Stn London 8.40 am
(70 min late). Was 'boarded' & pronounced
‘fit for Service in the field'. Met our Doc
& lunched with him. Called on Hockley.
Bought 2 c 1 gr 12 lb oatmeal with £5
Mrs Baze gave me for comforts our Bn.
Got letters No 42 Geoff, note fr Nell
10 Decr, & Rab 4 & 7th Decr, also wee Nellie
TUESDAY 30th.
Met Hockley, drove to Sparrow's &
lunched with Mr Bidmore at the
Baltic Exchange. Shown over great buildg
Kitchen & engine rooms &c.
Took parcels for home to Capt Taylor at
Wandsworth, & flowers for him, McCloskey
& Padre. Dined at Lyceum Club.
WEDNESDAY 31st.
Wrote Mr Byram; lunched at home.
Went out to 'The Gables', Surbiton, Dined
there & had very pleasant time.
Got home midnight
Got letter from Donnelly
Got wire summoning me to Buckingham
Palace for investiture next Monday.
FEBRUARY, 1917.
Thursday.
Got letters, fr NELL 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56,
57, -- 59. Geoff 39, Nellie (2), Jean (4), Geoff 43, 40,
Doug 24 Now & card; Doug Robinson, Jas Young; Bergin,
Musgrave (2 cards) Elsie (2), Cecil Ash,
THURSDAY 1st.
Bridge; Let No 10.
Acknowledged summons to the Palace.
Breakfast in bed, Major Davis called.
Went shopping & shifting Davis, & out
to Wandsworth. Snowing & pretty cold.
Got case binocular lettered.
FRIDAY 2nd.
Berners 8 - & Hotel 7 - hot Bud pt &
Went to lunch at Windsor with
Major Davis.
Dined at Berner's Hotel with Brig
General Cam Robertson.
Stanley at Baze's for the night.
Heard from Major Fraser that Hamilton
made Temp Major.
SATURDAY 3rd.

Looked around exterior of Castle.
Drove through the great park by Frogmore
& then over the Thames to Eton. Went
into the School Chapel, old Library &

At night took Ethel Baze to 'Three' cheers
Harry Lauder very good.
FEBRUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 4th.
Major Davis came to lunch.
Miss Jessie Baze Davis & I went to Concert
in Albert Hall. Walked home through Hyde
Park in heavy falling snow.
MONDAY 5th.
Limestone phosphate
Invested with Insignia of D.S.O
by King at Buckingham Palace.
Lunched at Royal Societies Club
with E.C. Barton & his son.
TUESDAY 6th.
2/6 for wattles
lunched at Windsor
Paid ¼ sub to British A/sian.
WEDNESDAY 7th.
Attended performance
of 'Some'. No good.
lunched & dined at Windsor.
FEBRUARY, 1917.
THURSDAY 8th.
Got order to return to France & Bn
tomorrow.
Met Lt Col Somerville & General Legge.
Stanley came to Baze's.
Davis & I went out to Richmond &
saw skating &c. Beautiful place
FRIDAY 9th.
Left Charing Cross at 12.25 pm
Arrived Boulogne about 4.30 pm. Left
at 9.25 pm, passed through Abbeville &
arrived Amiens about 2.30 a.m. waited
at Y M C A hut.
Hostile planes bombing Amiens.
SATURDAY 10th.
Australian Canteen Ribermont
Left Amiens at 6 am, arrived Merricourt at
about 10 am. Walked & got waggons lifts &
reached Bn at Contalmaison at 11.30 am.
FEBRUARY, 1917.
SUNDAY 11th.
Reported my return to Bn at Div Hd
Qrs. Introduced to Major General Smyth.
MONDAY 12th.
Visited D Coy Camp & went over their job
on Corps Light railways. Met Hancox & had
lunch at his Camp.
Yesterday opened two parcels from Nell & one
from Musgraves.
Got letters NELL 61 (& Fred), Tolley, Jess &
Peggy Robinson.
TUESDAY 13th.
Went through Gilbert Alley &
William Alley & over tram line to Le Sars.
Lunched with Donnelly at Martinpuichs.
WEDNESDAY 14th.
Went to D.H. Q to see C.R.E. Talked over the
defence & offence schemes.
In afternoon motored to Amiens & lunched
at Godbere's. Good but very dear.
Had supper at B Mess D.H.Q

THURSDAY 15th.
Visited Pozieres & sat on old
Windmill looking towards
our distant front line. Saw
four wrecked tanks.
FRIDAY 16th.
Visited D. Coy & went over
their job. Met Hancox & Harris.
Lunched D. Coy mess.
