Attended Grand opera
'Tristan & Isolda'. Rather
tedious.
Lunched with Arnell
& Newnes at Piccadilly

Lt Swallow to Mr. Boret's fine
home at Serbiton. Had a
delightful time. Most
superbly furnished home

Wednesday, 6 Went to matinee
of the Happy Day. A very
delightful, clean, bright
musical comedy.

Thursday, 7
Mrs Boret took Swallow & I
for a motor drive. Saw Chrystal
Palace & went into Dulwich Picture
Gallery. Passed Dulwich College.
Friday, 8 Met Capt. Arnall & Potts.
After lunch saw performance
of ‘London Pride’. Rather torpey.
Walked around Buckingham
Palace and magnificent parks.

Saturday, 9 Did some shopping &
lunched at Slater’s, Oxford St. after
leaving Selfridges & attended a
picture palace; rather a
good show: no damned chaplins.
Sunday, 10 Wrote to Rob
Had afternoon tea (5 o’clock) at
Mrs Boret’s, ‘The Gables’ Serbiton,
Invited me to christmas dinner.
DECEMBER , 1916
Monday, 11 Met Col Hooper: he took
parcel for home.
Lunched at Ye olde cheshire
cheese in Fleet St.
Called at Somerset House and
inspected Shakespeare’s will &
Lord Nelson’s will (signed Nelson
& Bronte.)
Visited ‘Army & Navy Museum
in old Palace at Whitehall.

Thursday, 21 Left hospital &
entered Convalescent home
in COBHAM HALL seat of
Earl Donnley at Cobhan, Kent.
Friday, 22 Went to Chatham
dockyard. Saw Destroyer LANCE,
cruiser Birmingham, Canopus
& several other ships & submarines
resent through schools & gunnery
& had tea with Admiral &
Mrs Erskine.

Saturday, 23 Walked through
the Shrubbery. Chitted in
Lady Donnelly's sitting room
Carol singing & christmas
tree in music room.
Sunday, 24 Major Davis & I
walked to SHORN & attended
church. Looked over the Thames
from in hills Came back through
THONG
In evening I read & had afternoon
tea in library. At night sang
carols & told ghost stories in
the dark around Yule fire.
DECEMBER, 1916.
Monday, 25 A beautiful mantle
of snow made a delightful
picture. Walked to Cobham
church. Xmas dinner in the
music room. Lady Birdwood
present. I sat next Lady
Dorothy Peploe.
Tuesday, 26 Major Davis & I walked to
Rochester. Visited old castle
& Cathedral. While on top of castle one
of our air ships flew over, low down.
lunched at the BULL inn (Pickwik's
favourite). In afternoon walked to
Borstal & visited Revt Mason.
Walked home again: no cars
to be had
DECEMBER, 1916.
Wednesday, 27 I went up to London
& bought Rose Bowl for Lady Darnby.
A very thick fog. Train delayed 40 min
in starting & ran slowly.
Drove up from station with
Lord Clifton. Supper with C/O.
Thursday, 28 16 left for Burring &c
DECEMBER, 1916.
Friday, 29 Visited RE. Institute,
museum & mess at
Bromptom near Chatham.
Then went to Canterbury &
into the wonderful Cathedral.
Most beautiful stately building
have ever been in.
Got cable from church.
Saturday, 30 Went as spectator to
a shooting party; pheasants & partridges
Lunched on venison & drove in
Earl Donnell's car & stood by him
most of the time. Guns had
good sport, Bag of over 100.
