Saturday, 16 Went with CRE to
YPRES by car.
Got word leave approved.

to Nell.

about 4pm & at London
about 7pm.
Put up at Hotel Windsor

Monday, 18 carlton club - visited Guild hall
& inner council chamber & sat in Lord Majors' chair
Visited Stock Exchange, service at St Paul's, London
Bridge, Billings gate, saw Dick Whittington's
church Bell tower. Saw The Bing Boys.
Left Rifles &c at Sparrow & Co. 14 St Mary
Ave, to be sent to Hockley's, M'borne
SEPTEMBER, 1916.
Tuesday, 19 Travelled via N.E railway
through York, Durham &c to EDINBURGH
Lodge at Station Hotel. Met Capt. Fisher
went with him to Lor English & French Revue
at Kings Theatre.
Wednesday, 20 Took early walk up to
Calton Hill; superb outlook. Rode about
several train routes. Inspected Scott
memorial, Castle &c most beautiful
City I have seen
Travelled to ELGIN by coast route
Halted for 2 hours in ABERDEEN & had
lunch in the granite city.
Arrived in ELGIN about 7 pm &
put up at Station Hotel.
SEPTEMBER, 1916.
Had a walk round ELGIN
Thursday, 21 visited old ruined Cathedral
&c. Very pretty places about.
Major Ramsey called with his car
& drove me round outskirts. Plucked
heath & heather on the hills.
Travelled by Highland Railway
to GLASGOW, having a halt of
about 2 hrs in PERTH during which
rove about that city on top of Cars &
bought white heather
Arrived GLASGOW about 7.30 pm
& put up at Central Station Hotel.
Friday, 22 Went to KILMARNOCK
& met Mr A.P. BROWN. Put up at
his home. Very kindly received.
Showed me all the sights. Called
on Mr & Mrs Manson & had tea with
them. Spent evening with Mrs Smellie
SEPTEMBER, 1916.
Saturday, 23 Arranged re deposits; agreed
5¼ incl Sundries & big a/c divided over
5 yrs, in qrs & 5yr renewals of maturings
not [[remited?]].
Went up to GLASCOW & dined with family
of Mr W.P. BROWN. In afternoon inspected
the GOVAN Ironworks (Dickson's Blazes) & then
toured the city, visiting Cathedral &c. Had
tea & a musical evening at W.P. Brown's.
Returned to Central Hotel.
Sunday, 24 Went for trip down
the Clyde & up Loch gyle.
Saw great lot of ship building.
SEPTEMBER, 1916
MONDAY, 25 Left GLASGOW at 10 am
& arrived at LONDON about
6.45 pm Lodged at Windsor Hotel
Attended performance of High
Jinks. Airships raided
midlands.
Tuesday, 26 Did shopping, visited
[[Halls?]] & xxxx£ left paybook
Inspected Tower of London &
rode through Bermondsey &
South London & into city over
Waterloo Bridge.
Attended performance of
'Professor's Love Story' a very
delightful clean play.
Met Lt Col Goddard
back from Australia
SEPTEMBER, 1916.
Wednesday 27 Attended at Service
in WESTMINSTER ABBEY & had
good look through the lovely &
historic building.
With Capt [[Walkinte?]] visited
Hampton Court in afternoon.
At night attended performance
of "Polish & Perlmutter in
Society'.
Thursday, 28 Left LONDON at
7.50am & arrived FOLKESTONE
10.30. Had a good look round
pretty town. Left in boat at
noon, arr Boulogne 2pm
Left 7pm arr Hazebrouck 12.30
Slept there.

Sunday, 1 Rode to Popp in
afternoon, got new glass
in & protector for watch.
At night rode out to Ypres
& walked out to new trench
across gap in the Salient
of No man's land. Was sniped
at. Two men hit
Monday, 2 Went out to Ypres
& inspected Ritz St &
Wellington Crescent &
Yeomanry Post, also the
work in Rly cutting &
Bn and Hd Qrs in ramparts.
Major Grant returned
from hospital. Looks
thin

Tuesday, 3 Went to D.H.Q &
saw Brugge re honours list &c.
Remitted No 4 for £15
home, making total to
date £70.

General Birdwood
presented military medals
to our men at a parade held
at Cavalry Barracks YPRES.
Called at 5th Bde Hd Qrs &
then went through ruins of old
church
Friday, 6 got up at 3 am &
drove out to Ypres with
CRE. Met [[Newres?]] & went
round front selecting some
M.G positions.

with G.O.C at St Lawrence Camp
re complaint of large number of
misdemeanours by Australians.

kids & Granny Annand
Sergt Checkley Mills called
with Nell's letter of instructions.
Tuesday, 10 rode motor bike to
Div Hd Qrs at Reninghelst & thence
to Poperinghe where I bought a
Flemish love collar for 24.50 fr.
Thence to army Corps Hd Qr & saw
Lt. Col Griffiths re offrs & reforcements &c
Thence to Cassell where I had
lunch
Got referendum ballot papers
&c (1100) from post.
OCTOBER 1916
Wednesday, 11 Went out to Ypres
& tried several cases.
Inspected Zillebeke Rd from
Shrapnel corner to the village.
Asked 7th Bde for carrying party
for Sanctuary dump road - declined.
Thursday, 12 Called on Bn Genl
Gillibrand re CT new gap &c.
Rode into Poperinghe & bought Tinny
Cooker &c.
GOT LETTER No 36 from Nell
(No 35 not yet to home) also photos
WROTE to Nell No 33
Sent LACE collar 17/6. (Pop)
OCTOBER, 1916.
Friday, 13 Went out to Ypres &
inspected trenches on our right
(new area) also reconnoitered Fosse
Way &c
wrote to Rob.
Saturday, 14 Went out to Ypres on
Motor cycle & called at 2nd Bde Hd
Qrs, but found 6th Bde not yet gone
in. In afternoon rode motor
bike through Neuve Eglise & bought
lace 66.50 fr to send home.
Motor would not start for return
journey, so had get it overhauled
by a mechanic

Wednesday. 18 Showed Lt. Col.
Stephenson over the Ypres Salient
positions & the town.
B&D companies relieved by 9th
South Staffores & marched into
Montreal Camp.
